M.V.P. Bergeron, Canada win Gold
January 4, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
Providence Bruins center Patrice Bergeron was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2005 World Junior Championships after leading Canada to its first Gold Medal since 1997 following Tuesday night's 6-1 rout of Russia in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Bergeron, who tallied a goal and an assist in the victory, was the tournament's leading scorer. The 19-year-old native of Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec notched 5-8-13 totals in six games, leading Canada to a perfect 6-0-0 record.
The Bronze Medal game was played earlier in the day, as the Czech Republic defeated the defending-champion United States, 3-2 in overtime.
Bergeron had already won a Gold Medal with Canada at the 2004 World Championships last spring. He left the Bruins on December 13 to join Canada after notching 10-17-27 totals in 25 games with Providence. The point totals rank third on the team behind Andy Hilbert and Brad Boyes.
Bergeron will rejoin the Bruins on Wednesday afternoon, and will be with the team as it continues its six-game road swing on Friday, January 7 at 7:30 p.m., at Springfield. All the action will be broadcast live on WDDZ AM-550 and on the team website, www.providencebruins.com.
The Bruins return home to host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday, January 14 at 7:05 p.m., and the Worcester IceCats on Sunday, January 16 at 4:05 p.m. The first 4,000 fans in attendance will receive a free Providence Bruins hat, courtesy of the Rhode Island Lottery and WPRI CBS-12.
