Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings are pleased to announce they will host former Clinton player and Major League Baseball 30-game winner Denny McLain on Wednesday, July 4th. McLain, 68, will sign autographs before and during the 7:00 PM game against the Beloit Snappers, throw out a ceremonial first pitch and will be on the air with LumberKings radio voice Chad Seely for an inning. McLain will have his book, "I told you I wasn't perfect" available for purchase and will also pose for pictures with fans.
McLain played in Clinton in 1962 at just 18 years old and was 4-7 with a 3.56 ERA in 16 games. He threw 91 innings and registered 93 strikeouts while throwing eight complete games.
McLain's 1968 season with the World Champion Detroit Tigers is one of the best single-season performances by a pitcher in Major League Baseball history. The 24-year-old was 31-6 with a 1.96 ERA and won the American League Cy Young Award as well as the American League MVP Award while being selected to his second All-Star Game. Before McLain, Dizzy Dean was the last pitcher to win 30 games in a season, accomplishing the feat in 1934 and no pitcher has done so since.
After McLain won 24 games and shared the 1969 American League Cy Young Award with Baltimore's Mike Cueller, trouble started. He was suspended by MLB commissioner Bowie Kuhn for his involvement with gambling and was later suspended two more times during the 1970 season. After struggling in 1971, he was traded to the Washington Senators and later traded again to the Oakland Athletics and Atlanta Braves. He retired in 1973 and was out of baseball by the age of 29.
All autographs and pictures are free with the purchase of a LumberKings game ticket. For tickets and more information, contact the LumberKings office at 563-242-0727 or www.lumberkings.com.
