Hawks Drop Third Straight, Fall 7-1

The South Bend Silver Hawks (35-36, 0-1) opened the Midwest League second half Friday night with a 7-1 loss against the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth-Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Mich. The Whitecaps scored six runs in the second inning and never trailed in the game.

Tyler Green (2-4) started for South Bend and took the loss, allowing six runs - three earned - on a season-high nine hits. Wilsen Palacios (8-4) earned his team-leading eighth win by tossing five shutout innings and allowing just four hits. The right-hander walked three and fanned three.

The Silver Hawks got two-hit performances from Matt Helm and Ryan Court. Helm knocked in the Silver Hawks only run of the game on an RBI single in the eighth inning - the Silver Hawks had gone 12 innings since their last run, dating back to Sunday's game with the Whitecaps.

West Michigan sent 10 men to the plate in the decisive second inning. Jeff Holm singled in a run while Luis Castillo and Aaron Westlake each contributed run-producing doubles. Castillo finished 2-for-5 with two doubles and two knocked in. Eugenio Suarez, Lance Durham, Zach Maggard and Holm each tallied two hits in the game.

The Silver Hawks had opportunities to chip away at the West Michigan lead. South Bend loaded the bases in the fourth inning but did not score. The Silver Hawks again loaded the bases in the ninth inning but did not come away with any runs. The Silver Hawks left 11 men on base in the game.

Keith Hessler got the final out of the fourth inning and worked a scoreless fifth inning. Willy Paredes hurled two innings and allowed one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts. Matt Sample struck out the side in the eighth inning.

The Silver Hawks have lost three games in a row dating back to the first half and are 3-4 against the Whitecaps this season.

South Bend matched a season-high with four errors committed in the game.

The Silver Hawks and Whitecaps play game two of the series Saturday at Fifth-Third Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. EST. Right-hander J.R. Bradley (3-4, 4.88) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by West Michigan southpaw Kyle Ryan (4-2, 3.74). The Silver Hawks return home for nine straight games beginning Monday at 7:05 p.m. against the Great Lakes Loons.
