Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Kansas City Royals, have announced that pitchers Kyle Smith, Bryan Brickhouse, infielder Jack Lopez and outfielder Julio Aparicio have joined the Cougars roster. A trio of Cougars: pitcher Matt Ridings, infielder Orlando Calixte and outfielder Lane Adams have been promoted to High-A Wilmington. Pitcher Scott Alexander has been placed on the disabled list and transferred to the Royals' spring training complex in Surprise, Arizona. The Cougars have also received catcher Tyler Smith, who has been placed on the disabled list and is not on the active roster. This morning's transactions take the Cougars to an active roster of 25 players as the team opens the season's second half with a three-game series at Clinton, Iowa. First pitch for this evening's game is set for 7 p.m. in eastern Iowa.

Three of the newest Cougars will be making their professional debuts, including two high-round prep pitchers that combined to fan 245 batters in 141 innings as seniors. That list includes Bryan Brickhouse (3rd Rd, 2011, 95th overall) and Kyle Smith (4th Rd, 2011, 126th overall). Brickhouse graduated from The Woodlands (TX) HS and compiled a 7-2 record and 1.08 ERA, along with 129 strikeouts in 72 innings, as a senior. The righty was named All-Greater Houston Pitcher of the Year and an Under Armour All-American. Brickhouse attended the same high school as '11 Cougar Brett Eibner, who currently is at High-A Wilmington.

Kyle Smith went 9-1 with a 0.40 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 69 innings as a senior at Santaluces HS in Lantana, FL and bypassed an opportunity to play at the University of Florida by signing with the Royals.

Lopez (16th Rd, 2011) was also a high school draftee by the Royals. As a senior at Deltona (FL) HS last season, Lopez batted .462 with 10 home runs and 34 RBI. Lopez's father, Juan, is currently the bullpen coach of the Cincinnati Reds.

Tyler Smith (Non-drafted free agent, 2011) was a college teammate of current Cougar Murray Watts, and played in 20 games at Rookie-Advanced Idaho Falls last season.

Aparicio (Non-drafted free agent, 2007) played in 67 games with the Cougars last season, batting .169 with 3 home runs and 14 RBI.

The Cougars lose 2 of their 4 Midwest League All-Stars to promotions. Adams (13th Rd, 2009) finished the first half with 78 hits, good for 5th in the Midwest League. Calixte (Non-drafted free agent, 2010) led the Cougars with 10 home runs in the first half. Ridings (41st Rd, 2010) made a team-high 21 appearances out of the Cougars bullpen and posted a 2.43 ERA.
