Great Lakes Loons News Release
LANSING, MI - Jarret Martin and three relievers combined on a two-out shutout, and the Great Lakes Loons blanked the first-half champion Lansing Lugnuts 4-0 Friday night. The game was played in front of a boisterous crowd of 8,415.
Martin (4-5) was named a Midwest League all-star, but had struggled recently with an 8.82 June ERA entering Friday's start. But the lefty acquired from the Orioles in the off-season, allowed just two hits in five shutout frames. He walked four but struck out five to record the win. Lansing's biggest threat against Martin came in his fifth and final inning, when he loaded the bases with one out on a hit and two walks, but got Carlos Perez to ground into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
Matt Shelton followed with two innings and two strikeouts. Raydel Sanchez struck out two in the eighth. Mike Thomas worked the ninth. None of the three relievers allowed a hit or a run and all three walked one batter.
Loons struck for two early runs against left-hander David Rollins. Scott Schebler flared a single into left field with two strikes and two outs in the first, scoring James Baldwin and Jesus Arredondo. Rollins (5-1) finished the contest with a career-high eight strikeouts over five innings, allowing just two hits and those two runs, but was charged with the loss.
Great Lakes added two insurance tallies in the seventh, when Pedro Guerrero singled home Nick Akins and Pratt Maynard versus reliever Bryan Longpre.
Schebler finished the game with a team-high two hits.
The Loons (1-0 first half, 35-36 overall) continue their three-game series against the Lugnuts (0-1, 47-23) Saturday night in the state capital. Game time is 7:05pm. Right-hander Ralston Cash (1-1, 5.68 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons against Lansing righty Noah Syndergaard (3-2, 3.92). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com.
The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
