Chiefs Lose 5-3 Friday

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs snapped their nine-game home winning streak in a 5-3 loss Friday night to the Quad Cities River Bandits in the opening game of the second half. The Chiefs (35-35) lost for only the third time when leading into the eighth inning.

The River Bandits used a two-out rally to get on the board in the fourth inning. After retiring the first two hitters, Jose Rosario walked Colin Walsh and Anthony Garcia followed with a double to left field. David Medina drove a Rosario first pitch for a double to right field which scored both Walsh and Garcia to give Quad Cities a 2-0 lead.

The Chiefs answered quickly in the bottom of the fourth off Sam Gaviglio. With one-out, Dustin Geiger lined a double to leftfield. Paul Hoilman punished a 1-2 pitch to left field to tie the score at two apiece. Javier Baez grounded a ball through the left side of the infield and stole second base. With two-outs, Yasiel Balaguert put a ball in the right-center gap to bring in Baez and give the Chiefs were ahead 3-2.

Quad Cities got to a tiring Rosario in the top of the eighth and took the lead. Neal Prichard hit a one-out infield single and came around to score on a flyball triple by Matt Williams which was lost in the lights by Pin-Chieh Chen making the score 3-3. Nick Martini walked on four pitches which brought up Colin Walsh. Walsh singled on a fly ball to center putting the River Bandits up 4-3. Rosario was relieved by Luis Liria who loaded the bases with only one gone but escaped the jam after Sergio Burruel picked off Martini at third and Medina struck out.

In the top of the ninth, the River Bandits got an insurance run. Leading off the inning, Luis Mateo took a Liria 2-2 pitch deep into leftfield and Quad Cities led 5-3. The Chiefs went in order against Quad Cities closer Heath Wyatt, who earned his tenth save.

Rosario (6-6) took the loss pitching 7 1/3 innings, allowing four runs, on six hits with two walks and he struck out three. Liria finished the game with 1 2/3 innings and he gave up one run on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Paul Hoilman (1B) - Hoilman tied up the score in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run, his seventh of the season. The two RBI give him 47 on the year.
