Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - A late Maxx Tissenbaum error allowed the Lansing Lugnuts (2-5, 34-43) to rally past the Fort Wayne TinCaps (1-6, 44-32), 7-5, at Cooley Law School Stadium on Wednesday night.
The win for Lansing is their first in 10 attempts against the TinCaps this season.
Lansing starter Ben White departed with the Lugnuts up 5-3 entering the eighth, but Corey Adamson led off against Ian Kadish (Win, 3-2) with an infield single for the Caps and Alberth Martinez followed with a two-run homer to left, tying the game.
It did not take long for Lansing to retake the lead for good.
Carlos Ramirez reached on an infield single to lead off the home half of the eighth, beating out a high chopper up the middle. After a groundout moved Ramirez to second, Emilio Guerrero hit a bouncer to Fort Wayne second baseman Maxx Tissenbaum, who booted the ball into right field, allowing Ramirez to score and putting Lansing ahead, 6-5.
Two batters later, Guerrero came home on Dwight Smith, Jr.'s single to center to add an insurance run and close out the scoring.
In total, White pitched seven strong innings, allowing three runs - all earned - on seven hits. He struck out three and walked two Fort Wayne batters.
Arik Sikula closed the door on the TinCaps in the ninth inning, earning his ninth save of the season.
Walker Weickel was taken off the hook following Martinez's game-tying homer, earning a no-decision himself in the start for Fort Wayne. Weickel lasted 5.1 innings, allowing five runs - four earned - on nine Lansing hits. He struck out four Lugnuts and walked two. Colin Rea (Loss, 0-1) took the loss for the TinCaps, allowing the two late Lansing runs in his Fort Wayne debut.
The Lugs managed some early offense against Weickel, as Kevin Patterson blasted a mammoth home run out of the park in the first inning and Santiago Nessy drove in a run with a double off the wall in the third as Lansing slugged 12 total hits on the night.
The middle game of the series is set for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on a Labatt Blue Light Thirst Thursday at Cooley Law School Stadium. The Lugs will send 18-year old Roberto Osuna (3-3, 3.72) to the mound against Fort Wayne right-hander Zach Eflin (3-4, 3.43).
