Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A 3-run 5th inning aided the Kernels to a 5-2 win over the Burlington Bees on Wednesday night. The Kernels have won six straight to open the second half and are now a season high 18 games over .500.
The Kernels got on the scoreboard first as Dalton Hicks singled home Niko Goodrum, who doubled to lead off the opening inning.
Kernels starter Jose Berrios got out of a bases loaded jam in the 3rd. Burlington had no outs in the frame, but tacked on just 1 run via a fielder's choice RBI by Chance Ross.
Bees starter Pat Lowery retired 10 in a row at one stage in the game before Max Kepler launched a solo home run over the right field wall and onto Rockford Road. Kepler has recorded homers back-to-back games and 6 of his first 8 hits as a Kernel have gone for extra bases.
J.D. Williams and Michael Quesada both singled and scored in the 5th in a big offensive inning for the Kernels. Jorge Polanco drove in Williams and Quesada with a double down the right field line followed by an RBI double to score Polanco by Hicks. Hicks finished 2-for-4 and now has 71 RBI on the season.
Andrew Ray narrowed the Bees' deficit in the 7th to 5-2 with a solo home run, his 5th long ball in as many days.
Berrios (5-3) exited after 7, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits while walking none and striking out 9. The 7 innings pitched and 9 punch-outs are both season highs. Alex Muren spelled Berrios and went the final 2 innings for his first save of the season, allowing no runs.
