Dayton Dragons News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich.-West Michigan starting pitcher Edgar De La Rosa and three relievers combined on a six-hit shutout as the Whitecaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 4-0 on Wednesday night. The game was the opener to a three-game series and an eight-game road trip for the Dragons, who fell to 3-4 in the second half. West Michigan improved to 5-2.
The Whitecaps broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the third inning, all after two men were out. Four straight hits produced three runs, keyed by a run-scoring single by Jared Reaves and a two-run single by Jeff Holm to make it 3-0. West Michigan added another run in the fifth to close out the scoring.
De La Rosa (4-2) allowed five hits over five innings to earn the win. The Whitecaps bullpen combined to give up only one hit over the final four innings to preserve the victory.
Dragons starting pitcher Jackson Stephens (0-2) allowed four runs (three earned) over five innings to suffer the loss. He gave up nine hits and one walk while striking out three. Kyle McMyne, Alejandro Chacin, and Joel Bender each pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Stephens.
Zach Vincej went 3 for 3 with a double to lead the Dragons offensively. The Dragons best chance to score came in the seventh when Vincej singled with one out to advance Daniel Pigott from first to third. Brandon Dailey followed with a fly ball to center. Pigott tagged at third and attempted to score, but the throw to the plate beat Pigott for a double play to end the inning.
The Dragons battle the Whitecaps on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the second game of a three-game series. Sal Romano (4-7, 4.76) will start for the Dragons against West Michigan's Jake Thompson (0-1, 4.34). The Dragons next home game is July 4th vs. the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
