Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

PEORIA, Ill. (JUNE 26, 2013) - The Peoria Chiefs got six innings of two-hit, one-run ball from right-hander Cory Jones and turned three double plays, while the Quad Cities River Bandits committed three errors in dropping their first game since June 15 in a 3-1 final at Dozer Park Wednesday night.

Jones (3-1) gave up a leadoff single in the first inning to right fielder Teoscar Hernandez, who was later caught stealing for the first out of the game. Jones issued a two-out walk to first baseman Jesse Wierzbicki but proceeded to retire the next 11 Quad Cities hitters before a fifth-inning walk to second baseman Austin Elkins, which was followed by designated hitter Terrell Joyce hitting into the Chiefs' first double play of the night. In the sixth inning, left fielder Jordan Scott hit a leadoff single and scored on a groundout by Hernandez, but Jones escaped a first-and-second jam by getting catcher Roberto Pena to fly out to left field.

Peoria (2-4 second half, 40-33 overall) scored all the runs it needed in the third inning against right-hander Jordan Jankowski (3-1), who suffered his first professional loss in his 40 th career appearance. Catcher Gerwuins Velazco hit a one-out single and advanced to third base on left fielder Breyvic Valera's single. Hernandez's throw to third hit Velazco, allowing Valera to move to second base with one out. Shortstop Ildemaro Vargas followed with a ground ball to Wierzbicki who reached over to his right side and had the ball glance off his glove toward shallow right field, allowing both runs to score. Jankowski was charged with one earned run on three hits while striking out five batters in five innings.

Quad Cities (5-1, 43-32) closed within 2-1 in the sixth inning, but the Chiefs turned away multiple scoring chances with their defense. Valera made a leaping catch at the left-field wall on a second-inning drive by River Bandits third baseman Rio Ruiz. When Ruiz and Joyce singled to put runners at first and third bases in the seventh inning, right-hander Joe Donofrio got Scott to ground to Vargas for an inning-ending double play. With two runners on and one out in the eighth, Wierzbicki flied out to right field, and third baseman Patrick Wisdom made a leaping grab to snare a line drive off the bat of catcher Roberto Pena. In the ninth, former River Bandit Dixon Llorens struck out Ruiz, then allowed an infield single to Elkins, and ultimately got Joyce to hit into the game-ending double play for his sixth save of the season and second against Quad Cities.

River Bandits right-hander Mike Hauschild kept the Chiefs off the board despite allowing them to load the bases in the sixth inning. He gave up a seventh-inning run, however, as center fielder Charlie Tilson hit a leadoff single and scored when Elkins overthrew first base on a double-play attempt. That made it 3-1, and the Chiefs defense held on to end the home team's three-game losing skid.

The River Bandits continue their series in Peoria Thursday night at 7 p.m., when right-hander Jamaine Cotton (1-3) opposes Chiefs left-hander Kyle Helisek (5-2). Quad Cities is in a three-way tie with Beloit and Clinton for second place in the Western Division second half.
