Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs pitching staff didn't give up an earned run and the offense scored a pair of runs in the third inning in a 3-1 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits on Tuesday night. The win snapped the Chiefs three-game losing streak and ran their record to 40-33 heading into Thursday's game.

Peoria plated a pair of runs in the third inning off Jordan Jankowski to score first. With one out Gerwuins Velazco singled to right and moved to third on a Breyvic Valera base-knock to center. After first basemen Jesse Wierzbicki misplayed an Ildemaro Vargas groundball, Velazco and Valera scored with the second of those runs being unearned making the score 2-0.

The River Bandits got one of those runs back in the sixth frame against Cory Jones. Jordan Scott led off the inning with a single to left and moved to third on a Jordan Walton throwing error. He scored on a Teoscar Hernandez ground out to short, cutting the Chiefs lead to 2-1 on the unearned run.

After the River Bandits put a runner on third in the top of the seventh, but did not score the Chiefs pushed a run across in the bottom of the frame. Charlie Tilson led of with a single and move to second on a ground out. After Velazco walked, Valera grounded into a 5-4 fielder's choice, but on the relay throw Elkins airmailed first base allowing Tilson to come around from second to score, extending the Chiefs lead to 3-1.

The River Bandits put runners on but failed to bring them across in the top of the eighth thanks to some great defense. Brett Phillips led off with a walk and Carlos Correa singled to put two on base. After a Wierzbicki moved Phillips to third with a fly ball to right, Wisdom jumped and caught a line drive off the bat of Roberto Pena that would have scored at least one run to keep the Chiefs lead at 3-1.

Dixon Llorens preserved the lead by pitching a scoreless top of the ninth inning. He struck out lead off hitter Rio Ruiz before Elkins hit an infield single. With the tying run at the plate Llorens forced Joyce into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game with the Chiefs winning 3-1.

Jones (3-1) tossed six innings giving up one unearned run on two hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts. Joe Donofrio pitched one scoreless innings giving up two hits and fanning one. Joe Scanio pitched a scoreless frame allowing one hit and one walk. Llorens pitched a scoreless ninth giving up one hit and striking out one.
