Columbus Clippers News Release
Back in Louisville for the second time this young season, the Clippers fell quietly to the Bats 7-2.
Louisville scored three runs in the first inning, and the lead was enough to last the whole game, despite the Clippers' efforts.
Just the second batter of the game, Cincinnati Reds top prospect Nick Senzel started the offense with a solo inside-the-park homerun off Clippers starter Shawn Morimando (1-3). Four batters later, Phil Gosselin doubled in D.J. Peterson and Brandon Dixon, who reached on a double and an error, respectively, to make it 3-0.
Yandy Diaz led off the fourth inning with a single for Columbus, and the next batter, Gio Urshela, walked to send Diaz into scoring position. Both runners moved up on a Francisco Mejia groundout, and Diaz scored on an Eric Haase single after that. Brandon Barnes followed up with a sacrifice fly to score Urshela, pulling the Clippers within 3-2.
In their half of the fifth Louisville knocked Morimando out of the game with back-to-back singles to start the inning. Morimando went four and one-third innings, allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked four and struck out two.
Louis Head replaced Morimando and loaded the bases after hitting Steve Selsky with a pitch.
Stuart Turner cashed in, singling to left to score two, extending the Bats' lead to 5-2. Blake Trahan then singled to center and the ball skittered under centerfielder Greg Allen's glove, allowing two more to come in, making it 7-2.
The Bats would take control from there, holding the Clippers scoreless for the remainder of the game.
The Clippers and Bats will do it all over again tomorrow night at 6:30 at Louisville Slugger Field.
