Louisville Bats News Release

BATS AND CLIP SHOW, PART II: The Louisville Bats and Columbus Clippers continue a three-game series at Louisville Slugger Field on Tuesday night. Louisville defeated Columbus by a 7-2 score in last night's game, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the first and tacking on 4 more in the fifth. Kyle Crockett notched his first win of the season and Domingo Tapia recorded his first save in the series opener. LOU won its second straight series opener after dropping its first five of the season.

AGAINST COLUMBUS: The Bats improved to 3-1 against the Clippers last night, winning both their third consecutive home game and third consecutive game against Columbus. After the Clippers beat the Bats 7-1 in the teams' first meeting of the season on April 9, LOU has outscored COL 22-5 across the past 3 meetings, out-hitting the Clippers 33-12.

THE SENZEL SHOW: Top prospect Nick Senzel got the party started for Louisville last night in its 7-2 win over Columbus, going 1-for-3 with 2 walks and an inside-the-park home run in the first inning. His inside-the-parker was the first for a Bats player since Juan Perez hit one as part of a two-homer game on April 20, 2017 in a 9-1 win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Last night marked the second time this season that Senzel walked twice in a game, also occurring on April 21 vs. Syracuse. He's reached base safely in 14 of his last 15 games, which includes a team-best 8 game hitting streak that lasted from April 12-23.

ONE MONTH DOWN, FOUR TO GO: The Bats finished the month of April with a 9-11 record. Due to the three-game cancellation in Buffalo earlier in the month, LOU's 20 games played in April are the fewest April games since 2009, when the Bats went 11-8 in the opening month of the season. Louisville finished the month ranked 6th in the league in average attendance (5,791). The Bats hit .243 as a team in April, 8th in the IL. As a pitching staff, LOU's 3.99 ERA ranks 9th in the IL.

BULLPEN SHINES IN WIN: Right-hander Domingo Tapia tossed 3.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in last night's win, registering his first save of the season. He and Kyle Crockett combined for 5.0 scoreless innings of relief, lowering the bullpen's ERA to 3.16 (29er/82.2ip) on the season. Last season, Louisville's bullpen ERA was 2.90 at the end of April. Tapia's save was the first 3-inning save for the Bats since Evan Mitchell 's on August 20, 2017 vs. Rochester in a 13-6 win.

GOSSELIN, PENNINGTON JOIN BATS: Infielder Phil Gosselin was optioned to Class AAA Louisville and had a productive Bats debut Monday night, going 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI. The journeyman has seen Major League action with 5 clubs: Atlanta (2013-15), Arizona (2015-16), Pittsburgh (2017), Texas (2017) and most recently Cincinnati (2018), batting .125 (3-for-24) with one home run and two RBI in 20 games with the Redlegs. Gosselin is the second recently optioned infielder to join Louisville, joining Cliff Pennington on the Bats' roster. Pennington, who's also spent time with 5 big league teams (OAK-ARI-TOR-LAA-CIN), has played in 2 games with LOU so far, going 1-for-5 with a double and run scored.

ERVIN, WEISS TO DL: The Bats placed outfielder Phillip Ervin and right-handed relief pitcher Zack Weiss on the disabled list Monday. Ervin, who was recently optioned to Louisville, made one appearance for the Bats this season, going 1-for-2 with a double, walk, run scored and stolen base. Weiss has made 5 appearances with LOU this season, going 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA (1 ER/5.2 IP) with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. He is the only Bats hurler with multiple wins in 2018, and he made his MLB debut with the Reds on April 12 (0.0ip, 2h, 4er, 2bb).
