The Lehigh Valley IronPigs sent the winning run to the plate with no outs in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to crack the scoreboard Tuesday against the Syracuse Chiefs. Hanging on for the 3-0 win, the Chiefs have now taken the first two games of a three-game set at Coca-Cola Park.
Jake Waguespack (0-2) made his Coca-Cola Park debut and worked six innings for the Pigs. Allowing just one run on five hits, Waguespack kept the IronPigs in the game until he turned the ball over to the pen in the sixth. He struck out four and walked just one in the outing.
Austin Voth (2-0) tossed five scoreless innings and allowed just two hits. Voth struck out eight and retired the last 10 of 11 that he faced. Overall, Chiefs pitchers had 16 strikeouts and seven multi-strikeout innings including the sides in the seventh and ninth.
Syracuse took the lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two-out RBI single by Hunter Jones. The score would hold until the top of the ninth when the Chiefs got much needed insurance. With the bases loaded the Chiefs scored a pair of runs against Austin Davis and built a 3-0 lead.
The Pigs finished the ballgame 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position including leaving the bases loaded in the ninth. Trailing 3-0, the IronPigs loaded the bases with no outs against Austin Adams (3), who responded with three straight strikeouts to close out the win for Syracuse.
With a single in the first inning, Roman Quinn extended his hitting streak to nine games. Later in the inning, Quinn stole is IL-leading 10th base.
The Pigs are back in action Wednesday morning for the series finale at 10:35 a.m. Cole Irvin will take the ball for the Pigs coming off his first Triple-A win last time out against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. It is Education Day at the park as the Pigs will host various schools from around the Lehigh Valley.
