From the Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Indy used a five-run first and four-run fourth to hold off Toledo in the series opener last night, 10-7. The Indians saw eight of their 14 hits go for extra bases in the triumph. Eric Wood led the way with two doubles, one homer and a season-high four RBI, and Jose Osuna finished his strong opening month with a 3-for-5 showing, clubbing his team-high third home run in the process. Jacob Stallings also logged a three-hit game to elevate his season average to .364, the third-highest mark in the IL. Tyler Eppler benefitted from the run support and lasted six innings, scattering seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts to become one of 10 pitchers in the league with three wins this season. Dovydas Neverauskas cleaned up a messy eighth inning and worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save in as many chances this year.
IL PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Third baseman/outfielder Jose Osuna was named as the International League's April Player of the Month after ranking among the top five in seven offensive categories. For the month, he finished among IL offensive leaders in extra-base hits (1st, 12), slugging percentage (1st, .656), RBI (T-2nd, 16), doubles (T-2nd, 9), total bases (T-2nd, 40), batting average (4th, .361) and home runs (T-4th, 3). He is the third Tribe player since 1998 to earn the award, joining left-handed pitcher Zach Duke (May 2005) and utilityman Alen Hanson (May 2015).
GAME NO. 200 IN TOLEDO: The Indians and Mud Hens meet tonight for the 404th time since the 1988 season and 200th overall at Toledo in the last 30 years. At Toledo's old ballpark, Ned Skeldon Stadium, the Tribe owned a 19-24 record from 1988- 2001. At Fifth Third Field -- which opened in 2002 -- the Indians are an even 78-78 overall. Indy has posted a 56-43 record at Toledo's home park since 2009.
SIX DINGERS: Despite belting two homers yesterday and five in total on the current road trip, the Indians still finished the month of April with a total of six home runs in 21 games, their lowest monthly mark since 2005. The previous monthly low for long balls was eight, set in April 2015.
CLOSING COMMITTEE: Through seven appearances, Indians reliever Johnny Hellweg still has a perfect 0.00 ERA on the season. He has recorded three saves in as many tries and has allowed just four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in nine innings pitched, good for a 0.89 WHIP and .138 (4-for-29) batting average against. Dovydas Neverauskas, who joined the Tribe on April 20, has yet to allow a hit in 7.1 innings pitched, recording two saves with five walks and 10 strikeouts.
CLAY'S 100TH START: Tonight's starter, Clay Holmes, will be making the 100th regular-season start of his professional career. Now in his sixth pro season (missed all of 2014 due to Tommy John surgery), Holmes owns a lifetime record of 31-25 and a 3.56 ERA. After being named as Indy's Rookie of the Year in 2017, Holmes is off to a strong start with the Tribe again this year (0-0, 2.45 ERA), riding a 10-inning scoreless streak into tonight's outing.
THEY'RE NOT AVERAGE: Four Indians rank among the IL's top 10 in batting average this season, led by Jacob Stallings' .364 mark that ranks third. Osuna is fourth at .361, Christopher Bostick is seventh (.322) and Austin Meadows in 10th (.311).
BY THE NUMBERS - 11-10: The Indians finished the month of April with an 11-10 record, marking the sixth time in the last seven years where Indy finished above .500 in the opening month of the season. The only year where the Tribe finished below .500 was in April 2017 when they posted a 7-15 record, only to win the division by eight games.
