Syracuse Mets News Release
Allentown, PA - The Syracuse Chiefs started May right where they left off in April, grabbing a 3-0 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs Tuesday night. Austin Voth was spectacular for the Chiefs, allowing just two hits and posting eight strikeouts in five innings. As a staff, Syracuse struck out 16 IronPigs, a season high. The win moves the Chiefs to a season-high six games over .500.
Syracuse (14-8) broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning. Jacob Wilson started the inning with a double and scored three batters later on Hunter Jones' RBI singled up the middle to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
The game held 1-0 until the ninth. Syracuse added two insurance runs after Jose Marmolejos singled to start the inning and Matt Hague singled with one out. Marmolejos moved to third on the hit and Hague followed him to second on the throw. Austin Davis then intentionally walked Wilson to load the bases and after a strikeout, Davis walked pinch hitter Bengie Gonzalez to bring in a run and push the lead to two. With the bases still loaded, Davis threw a wild pitch and Hague scored from third to extend the lead to 3-0.
Lehigh Valley (11-12) did load the bases in the ninth inning against Austin Adams with no outs, but Adams then struck out three straight batters to end the game and preserve the shutout. Eight of the Chiefs final nine outs recorded in the game came on strikeouts.
The Chiefs go for the series sweep Wednesday morning at 10:35 a.m. RHP Erick Fedde is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite LHP Cole Irvin for Lehigh Valley.
