FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Rymer Liriano stroked three hits, but the TinCaps gave up a pair of big innings on their way to a 9-2 defeat at the hands of the Great Lakes Loons, Monday at Parkview Field.
The loss means the TinCaps fell behind the Loons in the Eastern Division standings as they vie for the final playoff spot with a month remaining. It also snapped the TinCaps' streak of six consecutive series wins.
Great Lakes struck for three runs in the second inning. Nick Akins led off with a triple, then Chris Jacobs and Jon Garcia drilled back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 2-0. Two batters later, Jesse Bosnik singled home another run to push the deficit to 3-0.
Fort Wayne shrank the margin in the third. Chris Bisson cracked a leadoff double into the right- field corner. After a single by Rico Noel and a walk to B.J. Guinn, Liriano lifted a sacrifice fly to center and Luis Domoromo drove in another run with a groundout to slice the gap to 3-2.
TinCaps RHP Deiber Sanchez delivered three key perfect innings out of the bullpen, but in the eighth the Loons saw seven straight batters reach in a five-run outburst, blowing the game open to 8-2. Jon Garcia's RBI single in the ninth capped the scoring.
Loons RHP Zach Lee (7-3) pitched five innings to grab the win while Fort Wayne LHP Todd Privett (1-2) absorbed the loss.
The TinCaps dipped to 19-17 in the half, 49-56 for the season. Great Lakes upped its record to 20- 16 since the all-star break, 59-46 on the year.
The TinCaps open a four-game road series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A Tampa Bay Rays) Tuesday at 7:35 p.m. ET. TinCaps LHP Mark Hardy (8-7) gets the start against Hot Rods RHP Jason McEachern (0-1).
