South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - With a 6-1 loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps on Monday evening at Coveleski Stadium, the South Bend Silver Hawks lost the series two games to one. The Silver Hawks have lost six of the last seven series at the Cove dating back to the end of the first half, including five straight to Eastern Division foes.
Former Diamondbacks farmhand Kevin Eichhorn (WP, 8-3) went the distance for West Michigan, allowing just one run on four hits in shutting down many of his former teammates. Eichhorn played with Missoula and Yakima last season before being traded to the Tigers organization in exchange for Armando Galarraga.
Eichhorn held the Silver Hawks without a hit until two outs in the sixth inning when Ender Inciarte beat out an infield single. Yazy Arbelo doubled and scored on a Ramon Castillo single in the seventh inning, and Inciarte singled again in the eighth as the only hits for South Bend on the evening.
Jeff Shields (LP, 7-10) turned in his second straight quality start, giving up six hits and 3 runs in seven innings, but suffered the defeat. Shields allowed three consecutive base runners to start the third. Jeff Rowland singled, Curt Casali reached on an error, and Luis Castillo knocked in Rowland on a double to right field. Casali later scored on a James Robbins sacrifice fly to left field.
In the sixth inning, Robbins reached base on a single and moved to second on Gerson Montilla's first fielding error of the season for the Silver Hawks. With one out, Clay Jones singled home Robbins to push the lead to 3-0.
After South Bend scored their lone run in the seventh, Keith Cantwell (ND) gave up two homers in the top of the eighth to put the final margin at 6-1. Robbins led off with a solo homer and Steven Moya later added a two run blast over the batter's eye in center.
The Silver Hawks head out on the road Tuesday to battle the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays) at Cooley Law School Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM Eastern Time with RHP Bradin Hagens (6-4, 3.89 ERA) going up against LHP Egan Smith (5-4, 3.56 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 6:45 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
