Dragons Rally But Fall Short

Bowling Green, Ky.-The Bowling Green Hot Rods held off a huge comeback effort by the Dayton Dragons to defeat Dayton 8-6 on Monday night and complete a sweep of the three-game series. Trailing 8-0, the Dragons scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning and had the tying run at the plate with only one out before falling short to suffer their fourth straight loss. The Dragons fell to 23-13 in the second half and remained tied with Lansing for first place in the Eastern Division of the Midwest League.

The Dragons collected just one hit over the first eight innings of the game as Bowling Green scored five runs in the fourth against Dayton starting pitcher Josh Smith and three more runs in the seventh against reliever Luca Panerati.

Jefry Sierra started the Dragons ninth inning with a base hit and Theo Bowe grounded into a fielder's choice for the first out. Billy Hamilton and Ronald Torreyes followed with singles to load the bases. David Vidal doubled down the left field line to clear the bases and make it 8-3, and Vidal scored on Donald Lutz's triple to center. Chris Berset followed with a home run to right to make it 8-6. Juan Duran walked, and Jaren Matthews came to the plate representing the tying run with one out. But Matthews struck out and Sierra grounded out to second on a close play at first to end the game.

Smith (9-6) worked five innings, allowing seven hits and five runs with three walks and three strikeouts to suffer the loss for Dayton.

The Dragons finished with seven hits. Sierra was the only player with two.

The Dragons return home to host the West Michigan Whitecaps on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Tanner Robles (3-7, 6.88) will start for Dayton. The series continues through Friday.
