Chiefs Break Out Bats and Beat LumberKings 8-6

Clinton, IA - The Peoria Chiefs scored six runs in the middle three innings and held off the Clinton LumberKings 8-6 Monday night to end a season-long 12-game road trip. The victory gives the Chiefs a series win over Clinton for the fifth time this season and Peoria now heads home for an eight-game homestand at 12-24 on the half and 44-62 overall.

The teams traded runs in the first inning though both lost runners on the basepaths. After Rubi Silva was picked off first base for the second out of the first inning, Dustin Geiger walked and Richard Jones singled. Anthony Giansanti singled to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead before he was picked off first base by Clinton starter Jessie Nava. Clinton answered in the bottom half of the inning against Starling Peralta. Robbie Anston led off with a single and moved to third on a hit by Julio Morban who was thrown out at second on the play. A sacrifice fly by Kevin Rivers tied the game at 1-1. Clinton took a 2-1 lead when Mickey Wiswall hit a solo homer to lead off the second inning.

Micah Gibbs led off the fourth with a single to right and he scored to tie the game on a triple off the center field wall by Brandon May. Ben Klafczynski put the Chiefs on top 3-2 with a single to left and he moved to second on an error in left field. Ryan Kiel replaced Nava on the mound and Taiwan Easterling smoked a double to center for a 4-2 Chiefs lead. With one out Easterling scored on a wild pitch for a 5-2 lead before Kiel got out of the inning.

Peoria added to the lead in the sixth against Kiel. With two down Geiger singled and Richard Jones crushed his 18th homer of the season. The home run, to right-center, ended a 10-game homerless drought for the Chiefs and a 7-2 lead.

Clinton grabbed an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth and scored another run in the seventh as Robinson Lopez walked two and gave up a run-scoring single to Wiswall. On the base hit by Wiswall, Easterling threw out Kevin Rivers at third base and Yohan Gonzalez closed out the inning.

Peoria grabbed a run in the top of the ninth as Elliot Soto walked, moved to second when Gibbs was hit by a pitch and he scored when Clinton committed an error. Gonzalez gave up a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth and then Rivers hit a two-run homer to left to cut the lead to 8-6. Stefan Romero singled to bring the tying run to the plate but Gonzalez got the next three outs to preserve the 8-6 win.

Peralta (2-3) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks over five innings of work. He struck out three and allowed a home run. Lopez allowed two runs on two hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings of work while striking out one. Gonzalez earned his third save in nine chances despite allowing two runs on four hits over 2 1/3 innings. He struck out one and allowed a homer for the second straight outing.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Richard Jones (1B) - Jones was 3-for-4 with his 18th home run of the season and two RBI. Jones has a team-leading 19 multi-RBI games and 29 multi-hit games.
