Today's Game: The Dayton Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) meet the Bowling Green Hot Rods (affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays) in the third game of a three-game series. Season Series: Bowling Green 10, Dayton 8 (at Bowling Green: Hot Rods 6, Dragons 2).
Last Night: Bowling Green defeated Dayton 3-1 to win their second straight game in the series. Hot Rods reliever Jimmy Patterson allowed just one hit over four scoreless innings for the win. Bowling Green took a 3-0 lead into the ninth inning before the Dragons threatened to tie the game after an RBI single by Juan Duran put the tying run on first base with one out. But Nate Garcia closed it out to give Bowling Green their 11th win in their last 12 home games. Billy Hamilton and David Vidal each had two hits for the Dragons.
Today's Dragons Starting Pitcher: Josh Smith makes his 20th start of the season tonight. In Smith's last start last Wednesday vs. Fort Wayne, he suffered the loss (5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO). Smith is 2-2, 5.68 in six starts in the second half after going 7-3, 1.59 in 13 starts in the first half. He was the starting pitcher for the Eastern Division in the Midwest League All-Star Game on June 21 when he tossed one perfect inning and notched two strikeouts. Smith was the Dragons Pitcher of the Month for April (2-1, 0.93 ERA, 5 starts). Smith is a 23-year-old native of Margate, Florida who was signed by the Reds as a #21 draft pick in 2010 out of Lipscomb University. Smith was an Atlantic Sun Conference 1st Team selection in 2010 at Lipscomb University, where he tossed three straight nine-inning complete games March 26-April 9. On two occasions, Smith struck out 15 batters in a game. He finished fourth among all NCAA Division I pitchers in strikeouts.
Individual Notes
* Ronald Torreyes leads the Midwest League in batting average (.382) and base hits (55) in the second half. He ranks second in runs scored (behind Billy Hamilton). Torreyes is batting .392 since joining the club on June 17. Torreyes is batting .480 in his last 12 games.
* Billy Hamilton is batting .355 over his last 26 games, raising his average from .223 to .258. He has 75 stolen bases to set the Dragons club record for single-season and career steals. He leads all of professional baseball in steals.
* David Vidal is batting .344 with 8 HR and 33 RBI in his last 34 games, raising his average from .267 to .297.
* Daniel Wolford over his last 25 G: 42.1 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 0.64 ERA to lower his season ERA from 4.50 to 1.49. He has not allowed a run since June 9 (13 games, 23.1 innings).
* Blaine Howell has been unscored upon in 11 of his last 12 appearances. Over the span, he has allowed two runs in 17.1 innings.
* Drew Hayes not allowed a run over his last five outings covering five innings.
* Chad Rogers has allowed no runs over his last four outings covering nine innings.
Team Notes
* The Dragons are 9-4 over their last 13 games. However, they have lost three straight games within the same half for the first time since June 4-7. Officially, they also had a three-game losing streak that included the last two games of the first half June 18-19 and the first game of the second half on June 24.
* The Dragons went 19-9 in July (best record in the league). They are 29-16 over the last 45 games.
* Dayton has held at least a share of first place for the last 33 days (since June 29).
* The Dragons are batting .285 in the second half (35 games) after hitting .241 in the first half (70 games). The Dragons are averaging 5.7 runs per game in the second half (4.23 in the first half).
