
Loons Defeat Chiefs, 5-1

PEORIA, IL - Thomas Melgarejo recorded his third straight solid start, Andrew Lambo homered, Erik Kanaby was on base four times, and the Great Lakes Loons defeated the Peoria Chiefs Saturday night at O'Brien Field, 5-1.
The Loons have now won four of their last five games.
The Loons jumped out to an early lead in the first inning against Peoria starter Robert Hernandez. Jovanny Rosario walked and stole second base. Kanaby followed with a ground ball single up the middle to score Rosario.
Then in the second inning, Preston Mattingly tripled to right-center and scored as right fielder Elvis Lara's throw sailed down the left field line to give the Loons a 3-0 advantage.
Great Lakes added two more runs in the fifth inning on Andrew Lambo's 12th home run of the season.
Melgarejo (2-4) pitched six innings allowing one run and five hits. In Melgarejo's last three starts, he has allowed two earned runs (1.02 ERA). Garrett White hurled three scoreless frames for his second save.
The Loons (12-17 second half, 41-56 overall) continue their three-game series in Peoria against the Ryne Sandberg-led Chiefs Sunday afternoon. Game time is 3pm ET. Right-hander Bryan Morris (1-3, 3.21 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons opposite right-hander Kevin Kreier (4-3, 3.66). The game will be broadcast live on the flagship radio home of the Loons, ESPN 100.9-FM.
