Lugnuts crush Cougars, 8-2

Geneva, Ill. - The Lansing Lugnuts snapped a 10-game losing streak whne playing at Elfstrom Stadium Saturday night, as they defeated the Kane County Cougars 8-2. Lansing had not won at Kane County since May 28, 2005. The win also moved the Lugnuts to 2-2 on the current road trip.

Lansing opened the scoring in the first inning by using the longball. Jonathan Jaspe's two-run homer to left field, his fifth of the season, gave the Lugnuts a 2-0 lead. David Cooper would follow his lead two batters later, as he blasted a solo shot over the right field wall, extending Lansing's advantage to 3-0. Cooper has now hit a dinger in back-to-back games.

The Lugnuts added two more in the third when Jaspe started the frame with a single and moved to third on Matt Liuzza's double. Cooper then grounded out, but the out plated Jaspe to make it a 4-0 game. Kevin Ahrens then followed that with an RBI single into right field that brought Liuzza home, pushing the lead to 5-0.

Chi-Hung Cheng made the start for Lansing, but came one out shy of qualifying for the win. He tossed 4 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits. He also walked five and struck out four in the start.

Instead Jimmy Dougher (2-0) got the win for the Lugnuts, as he hurled 2 1/3 frames of perfect baseball. Dougher struck out four in his outing.

Anthony Capra (0-1) took the loss for the Cougars after hurling 3 2/3 innings. He was tapped for five runs on seven hits in his start.

The Lugnuts held a 6-2 lead in the ninth before scoring two more to put the game away.

Lansing (57-42, 18-11) and Kane County (49-47, 10-18) will continue the set Sunday afternoon. Trystan Magnuson (0-8, 5.95) will take the mound for the Lugnuts, while Chad Kerfoot (5-1, 2.23) will hurl for the Cougars. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
