Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (Jul 19, 2008) - The Burlington Bees lost 10-4 Saturday night at Community Field in the first game of a three-game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps. The Bees were only outhit by three but left ten batters on base in the loss.
West Michigan scored the first run of the ballgame in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Bees were able to answer right back. Johnny Giavotella hit a one-out double and then scored from second on a Mike Moustakas ground-out to tie the game 1-1.
West Michigan scored a run in both the second and third innings and never really looked back after that. The Whitecaps busted the game open by scoring five runs in the fifth and then finished their scoring out with a two-run sixth.
The Bees tried to begin a comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning. Moustakas led the inning off with a double and then scored on a Jason Taylor double. The Bees got two more runners on in the inning but a double-play ended the inning without any more runs scoring.
The Bees finished out their scoring in the eighth inning. With one out, Clint Robinson doubled. After one more out was recorded, Jamar Walton hit a no-doubt homerun for the second game in a row. The Bees once again got another two runners on in the inning but could not get any more runs to score.
Luis Cota, who is coming back from missing all of last season with an injury, made his first appearance with the Bees since 2005. In four innings, he allowed three runs on five hits and took the loss. Matt Peterson, who is also coming back from an injury, recorded just one out while allowing five runs, four of which were earned. Tim Huber made his Bees debut as well allowing two runs in 2.2 innings.
Burke Baldwin pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Zach Evangelho made his second professional appearance as a pitcher and pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The Bees had 11 hits in the game. Robinson had three of them while Nick Van Stratten had two. Van Stratten extended his hitting streak to 15 games.
The Bees and West Michigan continue the series Sunday afternoon at Community Field. Danny Duffy is scheduled to start for the Bees. First pitch is set for 2:00. The game can be heard on 1490 KBUR and online at www.GoBees.com.
