Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs fell to the Great Lakes Loons 5-1 in the series opener on Saturday night in front of 6,088 at O'Brien Field. The loss drops the first-place Chiefs to 19-10 in the second half and 49-48 on the season.
Great Lakes started off the game with two runs from their first two batters. Jovanny Rosario led off with a walk from Chiefs starter Robert Hernandez and was quick to steal second base. Erik Kanaby drove in Rosario with a single to right and stole another base off the Chiefs. Andrew Lambo grounded out, and Eduardo Perez scored Kanaby with a sacrifice fly to center field to put Great Lakes on the board 2-0.
The Loons wasted no time adding another run to their lead in the second. With one down, Preston Mattingly had a triple to the right field wall that was just missed by Elvis Lara. Mattingly was able to put the Loons up to 3-0 as a throwing error by Lara sent the ball past Jovan Rosa at third base.
The Chiefs got on the board in the fourth thanks to Jonathan Wyatt. Wyatt doubled to left off Loons starter Thomas Melgarejo. As he moved to steal third during Brandon Guyer's at-bat, Kenley Jansen, the Loons catcher, threw the ball over the head of Brandon Taylor at third base, allowing Wyatt to score and put the Chiefs behind the Loons 3-1.
A two-run homer in the fifth extended the Loons lead over the Chiefs. With one down, Kannaby was walked by Hernandez before Lambo hit a home run to left field and put the Loons further ahead 5-1.
Hernandez threw five innings and allowed five runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out four. Chris Siegfried held the Loons scoreless for three innings, allowing only two hits while walking two and striking out one. Craig Muschko threw one inning, giving up one hit and striking out one.
Player of the Game - Jonathan Wyatt (CF) - Wyatt had the Chiefs only run with a double in the fourth inning. He was 2-for-4 with a stolen base on the night.
