West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
BURLINGTON, IA - Three different Whitecaps had three hits and Alfredo Figaro won his Midwest League leading 12th game in a 10-4 trouncing of Burlington. The 'Caps have won consecutive games for the first time since July 5 and 6.
Brandon Douglas remained red hot and is now batting .706 (12-for-17) following four games with the Whitecaps. He went 3-for-4 with two RBI, two runs scored and a walk.
Joe Tucker went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored and Alex Avila went 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored.
Figaro pitched just 5.1 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits but issued no walks with five strikeouts. He is 12-1 and continues to lead the Midwest League with a 1.83 ERA.
Kyle Peter played for the first time since he suffered an ankle injury on July 7. As the designated hitter, Peter led off the game with a walk, stole second (his 33rd of the season) and scored on a ground out by Douglas.
The Bees matched the run in the bottom of the first, but West Michigan built a 3-1 lead with single runs in the second and third off starting pitcher Luis Cota, who made his first appearance for the Bees since 2005. Cota was a Midwest League All Star in 2005, but missed all of last year and the first three months of this season with a shoulder injury.
Matt Peterson recorded only one out in the top of the fifth in relief of Cota, but allowed five runs (4 ER) on four hits and a walk as the Whitecaps blew the game open. Tucker had a two run single off Peterson and Keith Stein capped the rally with a two run single off Tim Huber to put the 'Caps in front, 8-1.
West Michigan scored another pair of runs in the sixth inning to take a 10-2 lead.
Kelvin Cedano allowed a two run homer to Burlington's Jamar Walton in the eighth.
The Bees used infielder Zach Evangelho to pitch in the top of the ninth. He allowed one hit and no runs.
