PCL1 San Antonio Missions

Looking for Bullpen Improvement

April 13, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release

Missions manager Rick Sweet says it's imperative that the team improve its bullpen pitching.

But he says he's optimistic that it can happen with the current personnel.

"We still have to get better out of our bullpen," Sweet said late Friday night, after a 7-3 loss at home to the Nashville Sounds. "But, we're working on it. I'm not worried. We've got good people. Our personnel is good.

"This was a tough game. Got to finish it off."

The Missions led 2-0 after seven innings and then got the first two outs on the Sounds in the top of the eighth.

That's when the dam broke and the Sounds scored seven runs, all of them unearned, courtesy of two infield errors.

At the same time, the bullpen allowed five hits, including two doubles and a 3-run homer by Matt Davidson.

For the season, the bullpen has allowed 24 earned runs in 29.2 innings for a 7.28 earned run average. The pen has been charged with eight blown saves.

Missions starting pitching, by contrast, has surrendered only eight earned runs in 49.1 innings for a 1.46 ERA.

Scoring change

Missions shortstop Tyler Saladino has been charged with a fielding error on a ground ball by Carlos Tocci in the seven-run eighth inning, a team spokesman said. Initially, it was ruled as an infield single for Tocci.

Coming up

The Missions won two of three against Memphis to open the homestand. But they lost to Nashville in the opener of the current four-game series Friday night. After Saturday night, the teams will play on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and Monday at 11:05 a.m.
