Lake County Captains News Release
(Lexington, KY)--A standing-room-only crowd of 9,222 packed Applebee's Park in Lexington Tuesday night to watch a living legend in a Legends uniform. Three batters into the game, they were on their feet clapping for a 19-year-old hitter they never heard of.
Roger Clemens, the future Hall of Fame member, started and pitched three innings for the Legends against the Captains Tuesday, but it was Johnny Drennen who provided the biggest thrill of the evening.
After Clemens retired Niuman Romero and Marshall Szabo to begin the game, Drennen drilled a 2-2 pitch from Clemens into the right field seats for an improbable home run against one of the greatest pitchers of all time.
It was the fourth homer of the year for Drennen, and the crowd responded with a standing ovation for the youngster from San Diego.
Matt Fornasiere followed with a double to right field, but Clemens fanned Mike Conroy to end the game. He retired the side in order in the second with two more strikeouts. In the third inning, he gave up a lead-off single to Juan Valdes and hit Marshall Szabo with one out. He finished the inning with strikeouts of Drennen and Fornasiere, and left to his own standing ovation.
Clemens threw 63 pitches. He allowed three hits with no walks and six strikeouts. He is due to pitch at double-A Corpus Christi in his next start. After two more re-hab outings, he hopes to join the Astros on June 22nd.
In the midst of the Clemens hoopla, a baseball game broke out, and the Legends knocked off the Captains 7-4.
After the Captains took a 1-0 lead on Drennen's homer, the Legends scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first off Albert Vargas (4-7). Vargas then surrendered a three-run homer to Tommy Manzella in the second as the Legends forged a 5-1 lead.
Koby Clemens, Roger's eldest son and the Legends' third baseman, stroked an RBI double in the third to make it 6-1.
The Captains pulled to within 6-4 with three runs in the fourth off Jamie Gant (2-4). Josh Noviskey had an RBI single and Fernando Pacheco slugged a two-run homer, his eighth of the year.
Gant and righthander Sammy Gervacio then clamped down to retire 14 consecutive hitters until Conroy led off the ninth with a single. Nick Petrucci followed with another hit to get the tying run to the plate, but Gervacio retired three straight to notch his sixth save.
The Captains (25-33) will play gme three of the series on Thursday afternoon at 12:35. LH Tom Cowley will get the start for Lake County. The Legends will counter with RH Garrett Murdy.
The Captains will return to Classic Park on Friday to begin a seven-game homestand at Classic Park. For tickets, call (440) 954-WINS.
