June 6, 2006 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory Crawdad 3B Tony Mansolino smacked a bases loaded triple with one out in the second inning and scored on a failed pickoff attempt as the Hickory Crawdads were staked to a 4-0 lead and held on for a 4-3 win over the Greensboro Grasshoppers Tuesday afternoon at L.P. Frans Stadium in front of a crowd of 3,671.
Mansolino's line drive down the right field line scored 1B Mike Carlin, RF Brad Corley, and LF Jason Delaney. All three had singled off of Greensboro starter Aaron Thompson. Mansolino came home when Greensboro catcher Trent D'Antonio tried to pick him off of third base and airmailed the throw into left field.
Greensboro got single runs off of Hickory starter Blair Johnson in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Grasshopper 2B Gary Roche singled in 3B Jonathan Fulton in the third. Greensboro DH Kris Harvey scored after leading off the fourth inning with a double. He came in on Fulton's run scoring single. Greensboro SS James Guerrero stole home in the fifth inning on the back side of a double-steal with D'Antonio swiping second base.
Johnson (1-1) went five innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits to pick up the win, his first since last April. Dave Davidson worked two and one-third innings of scoreless relief allowing just one walk. Derrik Moeves got two outs for Hickory and did not allow a base runner. Justin Vaclavik was forced to get five outs in the ninth inning because of two strikeouts where runners reached on wild pitches. Vaclavik struck out four in the frame for his second save.
Thompson (5-3) allowed four runs on six hits in seven innings to take the loss. Wes Letson worked one scoreless inning out of the Greensboro bullpen.
The two teams play game two of a five game series in Hickory at 11am Wednesday. Hickory right hander Luis Munoz faces Greensboro righty Ryan Tucker.
