LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Matt Maloney and Carlos Carrasco have anchored the BlueClaws pitching staff this season, which currently ranks second best in the league. Because of their stellar seasons, Maloney and Carrasco are headed to the 2006 South Atlantic League All-Star Game.
Maloney leads the BlueClaws with five wins and has an earned run average of 1.91, which ranks third best in the South Atlantic League. More impressively, Maloney's 80 strikeouts this year puts him atop the leader board in the league. The most impressive outing for Maloney this year came on April 19, at home, against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. In six innings, Greensboro only collected one hit and were struck out six times. Twice this year, Maloney has recorded double digit strikeouts.
Carrasco has had impressive numbers for Lakewood this season. The right-hander has four wins this year and a 2.03 ERA, fourth best in the league. Carrasco's 73 strikeouts are second only Maloney for the S.A.L. lead. Carrasco's best outing came on May 12 at Hagerstown. Through eight shutout innings, Carrasco allowed only three hits and struck out nine batters. In his next start, Carrasco struck out a career high ten batters against Delmarva.
"We are extremely happy for Carlos and Matt and for the honor they have received," said Geoff Brown, BlueClaws General Manager. "It has been fun watching these pitchers dominate hitters all season and now they get to do it on a bigger stage."
Both pitchers are scheduled to make two more starts before the All-Star Game. This year's mid-season classic will be held on June 20 in Eastlake, Ohio at the home of the Lake County Captains.
In 2005, the Lakewood BlueClaws were the recipients of Baseball America's Bob Freitas award for overall excellence in Minor League Baseball. The BlueClaws have led the league in attendance every year, topping out at 444,607 in 2005 and became the fastest team in South Atlantic League history to reach the 2 million fan attendance mark.
