Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive avenged last night's lackluster performance by defeating the Charleston RiverDogs 3-2 Tuesday night at West End Field. Starting pitcher Michael Bowden (4-3) turned in a quality start to earn his fourth victory, tossing 5.0 shutout innings allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out three.
The Drive took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with three hits off RiverDogs starter Bryan Villalona (4-3). With one out, Dominic Ramos singled and advanced to third as Yahmed Yema followed with a single to center. However, Yema was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. Mark Wagner collected an RBI as he then singled home Ramos with a liner to left.
Solo home runs in the fifth and sixth innings extended the Drive lead to 3-0. In the fifth, Chris Turner led off with his team-leading twelfth home run of the season. An inning later, Tony Granadillo cracked a one-out homer to left. The homer, which was Granadillo's seventh of the season, was his second long ball in as many nights.
Reliever Tim Cox cruised through the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings before giving way to closer Blake Maxwell at the start of the ninth. Cox tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk, while punching out three RiverDog batters.
Maxwell and the Drive faced a scare in the top of the ninth, allowing two runs on two hits and a hit batsman. After striking out Marcos Vechionacci to lead off the inning, Maxwell hit Jose Tabata and gave up a single to Ben Jones. C.J. Henry followed with a double to plate Tabata for Charleston's first run of the evening. Eduardo Nunez then grounded out to Logan Sorensen at first to knock in Jones. Maxwell would bear down, however, and induce Tony Battle into a game-ending groundout to earn his seventh save of the season.
The Drive and RiverDogs continue their four game series Wednesday afternoon at West End Field for the fourth Businessperson's Special of the season. First pitch is set for 12:05 PM. Greenville will send right-hander Kevin Guyette to the mound as Charleston counters with left-hander Garrett Patterson.
