Charleston RiverDogs News Release
Charleston, SC-- The South Atlantic League announced today that three Charleston RiverDogs have been chosen to represent the Southern Division in the 47th Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game in Eastlake, Ohio. Jose Tabata, Reegie Corona, and Cory Stuart have been selected to the 25-man roster of the SAL Southern Division squad. The All-Star game takes place on June 20 at Classic Park, home of the Lake County Captains, and will be televised locally on Comcast Sports South, Comcast channel 42 in Charleston.
"This is a well deserved honor, these guys certainly deserve the respect form their peers due to the achievements each one has made in the First Half of the season" said RiverDogs manager Bill Mosiello.
Tabata, a 17-year-old native of Anzonategui, Venezuela, was named the starting right fielder for the Southern Division. Tabata currently ranks among the league leaders with a .319 batting average while his five home runs, 41 RBI, and 15 doubles each leads the RiverDogs and his mark of 61 hits is tied for most on the team. He leads Charleston with 18 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI games. Tabata's personal best of 5 RBI in a game came on April 16 druing a 9-2 victory over Augusta. A free-agent signing in 2004, Tabata is in his second season of professional baseball and was named the Yankees third best prospect by Baseball America coming in to the 2006 season.
Corona has been selected as a reserve utility infielder for the Southern Division. A free-agent signing in 2003, and a native of Caracas, Venezuela, Corona has started 22-games at shortstop this season for Charleston. He also has started at second base, third base, left field, and right field for the RiverDogs. Placed on the disabled list with a shoulder injury on May 24, Corona still ranks fifth in the SAL with a .338 batting average. Corona has 16 mulit-hit games, including a six-hit outburst during a 7-6 win over Rome on May 20. He also has Charleston's only multi-home run game of the season as he slugged two round-trippers in a 3-1 win over Savannah in game one of a double-header on April 27. The 19-year-old is in his third season of professional baseball.
"I've been continually impressed by the improvement each of these hitters has made this season" said RiverDogs hitting instructor Torre Tyson. "If both continue to grow and learn at this pace I could see them battling it out for the league batting title at the end of the season."
Earning a spot in the Southern Division's bullpen is RiverDogs closer Cory Stuart. Stuart has earned the role as closer for the RiverDogs and he leads the team with five saves. In 16 appearances this season he is 1-1 with a 3.50 earned run average over 18.0 innings of work. Stuart has proven to be an effective closer, retiring 75% (12 of 16) of the first batters he has faced. A 24-year-old native of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, Stuart is in his third season of professional baseball after being selected in the fifth round of the 2003 draft.
"Cory has been the anchor of our bullpen" Mosiello added. "He has been very effective when called upon late in the ballgame."
The Southern Division, the visiting team in the game, will be managed by Rome's Randy Ingle. Ingle and the Rome Braves have been in first place in the division for the majority of the First Half of the season. The Braves and the Asheville Tourists each placed a division-best five players on the Southern Division All-Star roster.
The RiverDogs are currently on the road at Greenville. The RiverDogs return to Charleston on Friday as they open a seven-game homestand. For tickets, or more information, log on to www.riverdogs.com or phone the RiverDogs at 843/723-7241.
