Columbus, GA - For the second straight night the Catfish (31-27) got six shutout innings from their starting pitcher to beat the Sand Gnats (23-35), this time by a score of 7-1. RHP Mario Alvarez (4-5) limited Savannah to just two hits and one walk to pick up the win. He struck out five. In his last four starts Alvarez is 3-1 with a 2.03 ERA.
The Catfish built an early lead beginning with one run in the first inning. RF Sergio Pedroza singled to drive in SS Ivan DeJesus, who reached base with a double. In the second inning LF Lucas May made it 2-0 with a solo home run, his seventh of the season. Pedroza added a solo home run of his own in the third inning, his 13th of the season.
In the fourth inning the Catfish opened up a 6-0 lead with three more runs. DH Drew Locke led off with a double, followed by a 1B David Sutherland walk. May drove in both runs with a triple to deep center field. C Juan Apodaca then drove in May with a single. May scored the seventh and final run on an error by SS Jonathan Castro in the sixth inning.
LHP Kale Garrison followed Alvarez with two innings of relief work and gave up one unearned run. RHP Ramon Troncoso pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
May finished the night 3-for-4 with one home run, one triple, three RBI and three runs. Pedroza went 3-for-4 with one home run, one double, two RBI and one run.
Game three of the four-game series will take place Wednesday at 7:00pm. Recently appointed SAL All-Star RHP Cory Wade (2-2, 4.22) will face RHP David Trahan (1-6, 4.20).
