Lexington Legends News Release

(HICKORY, N.C.) The Lexington Legends broke a 9-9 tie with a run in the top of the ninth inning and then had to cut down the tying run at home plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as they held on for a 10-9 victory over the Hickory Crawdads Tuesday night. The win ended Lexington's losing streak at 11 games.

In the top of the ninth, Ryan McCurdy drew a walk, stole second, and was sacrificed to third by Nolan Fontana. Chan Jong Moon followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring McCurdy and putting the Legends ahead 10-9.

Luis Sardinas led off the bottom of the ninth by drawing a walk from Legends reliever Dayan Diaz. Sardinas held at first as Rougned Odor popped out to Fontana at shortstop, but he advanced to second when Trever Adams grounded out. Zach Cone grounded a single into left field, but Ruben Sosa charged the ball and delivered a one-hop throw to McCurdy at the plate just in time to get Sardinas for the final out of the game.

Moon had four runs batted in for Lexington. Justin Gominsky had three hits and three RBI, and McCurdy stole two bases, his second and third steals of the season, and scored three runs.

The Legends took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Teoscar Hernandez singled, stole second, moved to third on a single by Sosa and scored when McCurdy's grounder got past first baseman Jorge Alfaro for an error. Sosa, who had reached second on the error by Alfaro, moved to third on Fontana's fly out to center field and scored on Moon's single.

The Crawdads answered with one run in the third inning and took a 5-2 lead with four runs in the fourth. Drew Robinson led off the fourth with a walk, and Jordan Akins was hit by a pitch. Sardinas doubled home two runs, moved to third on a wild pitch by Lexington starter Mike Foltynewicz, and scored on a double by Odor. Odor came home on a two-out single by Kellin Deglan.

The Legends tied the game at 5-5 with three runs in the fifth, the last two coming home on a two-out double by Gominsky. But Hickory claimed a 7-5 lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Robinson led off with a double and scored on a one-out single by Nick Urbanus. With Sardinas batting, Urbanus broke for second base as Legends reliever Mitchell Lambson threw to first. But first baseman Zach Johnson's throw to second went into center field for an error, and Urbanus came around to score.

Lexington regained the lead with three runs in the sixth. Gominsky capped the rally with a two-out single that drove Johnson home from second to put the Legends up 8-7.

The Legends added a run in the seventh when McCurdy walked with one out, moved to third on a single by Fontana, and scored on Moon's ground out. But the Crawdads came back to tie the game at 9-9 with two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a walk to Cone, a triple by Deglan and a single by Robinson, setting up the ninth-inning finish.

Dayan Diaz (5-4), who entered the game in the eighth inning, got the win. Coby Cowgill (0-1), who entered in the ninth for Hickory, took the loss.

Foltynewicz, who has a 14-3 mark, is scheduled to have one more start as he tries to match the Legends single-season record of 15 victories, set by Mike Nannini in 2001.

The Legends and Crawdads will meet in game two of their three-game series Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
