Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Lexington Legends outlasted the Hickory Crawdads, 10-9, in a back-and-forth battle before 1,094 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Tuesday night.
Lexington (29-34, 68-64) staked an early lead with two runs in the top of the third, before Hickory (35-29, 71-62) got on the board in the bottom of the frame. SS Luis Sardinas led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a base hit by LF Trever Adams one out later. CF Zach Cone then pulled an RBI single down the left-field line to score Sardinas and cut the Legends lead to 2-1.
The 'Dads took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when DH Drew Robinson led off with a walk and advanced to second after RF Jordan Akins was hit by a pitch. Sardinas then hit a two run RBI double down the left field line scoring Robinson and Akins. 2B Rougned Odor followed with a RBI double to right field scoring Sardinas. Odor would score on a RBI single from C Kellin Delgan pushing the Hickory lead to 5-2.
The Legends tied the score with three runs in the top of the fifth inning after back to back singles from Fontana and Moon, and a walk to 1B Zach Johnson loaded the bases. Fontana scored on a RBI sacrifice fly driven to deep left field by DH Jobduan Morales that also moved Moon and Johnson up to third and second respectively with them tagging on the play. RF Justin Gaminsky then hit a RBI double to score Moon and Johnson and tie the ballgame 5-5.
The tie wouldn't last long with Hickory going back ahead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Robinson opened the inning with a double to right field and moved to third on a ground out. 3B Nick Urbanus hit a RBI infield single off P Mitchell Lambson's glove, scoring Robinson from third. With Sardinas hitting, Urbanus would steal second base and come all the way in to score after a throwing error put the ball into left field helping the 'Dads regained the lead, 7-5.
Lexington would go ahead with three runs tallied in the top of the sixth inning. The inning started with two hit batsmen and two errors as RBI singles from Morales and Gaminsky put the Legends on top 8-7.
An additional run in the top of the seventh doubled Lexington's lead. Moon grounded out scoring C Ryan McCurdy, who had previously reached on a walk and advanced to third, and the Legends were ahead, 9-7.
Hickory was able to bring the score tied with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when Cone started the frame with a walk and scored on a RBI triple from Deglan. Robinson pulled a RBI single to right field and Deglan came across with the tying run knotting the game at 9-9.
The Legends added the tenth, and final run of the ball game, in the top of the ninth inning. McCurdy walked, stole second base and then reached third after a sacrifice bunt by Fontana. Moon would then lift a RBI sacrifice fly to deep left field allowing McCurdy to tag and score the winning run as Lexington held on to win, 10-9.
