Rain Suspends Game Two After Mitchell's Gem

CHARLESTON, SC - Bryan Mitchell hurled six shutout innings to pick up his eighth win as the Charleston RiverDogs shutout the West Virginia Power 3-0 in game one of a South Atlantic League doubleheader at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The second game was suspended due to rain in the top of the fourth inning with the score tied at 0-0.

The RiverDogs and the Power will play a doubleheader Thursday beginning with the resumption of the suspended game at 4:05 pm. The two teams will finish the first game in seven innings and the second game, which will also last seven frames, will begin no earlier than 6:05 pm. Fans holding tickets for Wednesday's game can exchange them for tickets to Thursday's doubleheader.

With the win in game one, their fifth in a row, Charleston improves to 68-62(29-34 in the second half). West Virginia's record now stands at 57-77(34-30 in the second half).

In game one, Mitchell's (8-11) spectacular performance completely disarmed the Power's potent offense. He gave up only two hits and two walks with three strikeouts and didn't allow a batter to reach second base in six frames. Mitchell got all the run support he would need from Charleston's lineup.

The RiverDogs immediately got on the board with a run in the first inning when Ben Gamel (3-3, run) singled, the first of three hits for the centerfielder, moved to second on an error and scored on a base hit by the newest RiverDog, Casey McGehee. In the second, Dante Bichette, Jr. made it 2-0 when he came across on an Eduardo Sosa groundout. Rob Refsnyder then tacked on a third run in the fourth by launching a solo homer, his fourth of the year, out to left, closing out the scoring. Pedro Guerra tossed a perfect final inning to earn his eighth save in this seven inning contest.

BALLPARK FUN: Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney captured the RiverDogs' Bobblection promotion with 52 percent of the local fans' "vote." The first 1,000 fans to the game had the opportunity to secure a bobblehead of either Barack Obama or Romney, and the former Massachusetts governor's bobble was gobbled up by fans (500-456). It also clinched the "election" for Romney as the promotion, which was orchestrated by the RiverDogs' ownership group, The Goldklang Group, encompassed the Group's teams and several others that totaled 10 separate markets across the country. Fans were able to observe the on-going balloting through www.bobblection.com.

Also, approximately 1,000 Citadel cadets were in attendance as part of the club's salute to the Military College of South Carolina.

COMING UP: The RiverDogs will play their final home date of the season on Thursday with the scheduled doubleheader. RHP Will Oliver (3-5, 4.67 ERA) will resume the first game on the mound and RHP Philip Wetherell (5-8, 6.43 ERA) will start game two. West Virginia's pitchers for both games are TBD. The evening will include a Budweiser Thirsty Thursday complete with DJ Natty Heavy and $1 beers in the Ashley View Pub. There will be giveaways throughout the game as part of Fan Appreciation Night, and there will be FREE parking for all fans attending the game. The 2012 regular season at The Joe will then be closed out in spectacular fashion with Season Finale Fireworks to provide the perfect ending to another great summer of baseball.
