Asheville Tourists News Release

After dropping three of four games in Greenville, the Asheville Tourists returned to McCormick Field to open up a three-game set against the Savannah Sand Gnats on Tuesday night. The Tourists fell behind early, but rallied to take a comfortable lead which almost slipped away in the ninth inning.

Gilbert Gomez put the Gnats in front 1-0 with a single to center in the third inning. Dustin Lawley opened up the fourth with a solo Home Run and Savannah led 2-0. Sand Gnats' starter Domingo Tapia cruised through the first five innings but he ran into trouble late.

After Trevor Story doubled with one out in the sixth, Tyler Massey hit a two-run Homer; knotting the game 2-2. In the seventh, the Tourists broke the game open. Jordan Ribera led off the frame with a double off the centerfield wall. After Sam Mende sacrificed him to third, Jared Simon doubled to left putting the T's in front 3-2.

The next batter, Ryan Casteel, doubled off the wall in right to score Simon. David Kandilas followed with a two-run Home Run and the Tourists led 6-2 after seven.

In the bottom of the eighth, Asheville put runners at first and second with no outs for Ribera. The Tourists first-baseman lined out to Brandon Brown who then started a 4-6-3 triple play as both runners were caught off the bases.

In the ninth, the Gnats used that momentum to nearly tie the game. Greg Pron reached on a strike-three wild pitch to begin the inning. Brown then grounded a ball to Story, but it took a bad hop and put runners at the corners. After an RBI groundout made it 6-3, back-to-back singles plated Brown.

With runners at first and second, Cam Maron hit a ball off the scoreboard but was thrown out at second base. The hit did score one and cut the Tourists lead to 6-5. With the tying run 90 feet away, Brian Harrison grounded out to end the game.

The Tourists have won their last eight games against the Sand Gnats; all in the month of August.
