HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads topped the Lexington Legends, 5-3, before 995 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Wednesday night. Hickory only trails the Hagerstown Suns by 3.0 games for the final playoff spot with five games remaining in the regular season.

The Crawdads (72-62, 36-29) got off to a quick start with a run in the bottom of the first inning against LHP Luis Cruz (L, 9-8). SS Luis Sardinas led off with a single to left field, before moving to second base on a wild pitch. After Sardinas moved to third on a ground out, 1B Trever Adams drew a walk to put runners at the corners. Hickory then completed a double steal, with Adams distracting the Legends between first and second base while Sardinas sprinted home from third, putting Hickory in front, 1-0.

Lexington (68-65, 29-35) came right back in the top of the second against RHP Jerad Eickhoff (W, 13-7). With one down, RF Justin Gominsky singled himself on base, and then quickly stole second. After CF Teoscar Hernandez drew a walk, LF Ruben Sosa loaded the bases with a single. SS Nolan Fontana struck with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field, tying the game, 1-1.

Hickory retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the third inning. 2B Rougned Odor led off with a solo home run pulled over the right field wall, lifting Hickory into the 2-1 lead.

The Crawdads opened the advantage with another run in the bottom of the fourth frame. LF Alejandro Selen started the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a fielding error that also allowed C Jorge Alfaro to reach first base. DH Kevin Torres placed an RBI single just inside the right field foul line, scoring Selen and boosting Hickory's lead to 3-1.

After a solo bomb by 2B Chan Jong Moon in the top of the fifth brought Lexington within one run of tying it, the Crawdads padded the lead in the bottom of the sixth. With two down, Torres knocked a base hit to extend the frame for CF Jordan Akins. Akins sent a towering two-run shot off the batter's eye beyond the center field wall, swinging Hickory ahead by three runs, 5-2.

LHP Greg Williams had taken over for Eickhoff in the top of the sixth, and finished his perfect two-inning outing with a scoreless top of the seventh. Lexington, however, chipped the deficit in the top of the eighth inning. After RHP Jose Monegro retired the inning's first two batters, DH Chris Epps skied a solo home run over the right-field wall, making it 5-3.

The Legends then attempted a ninth-inning comeback, getting runners at the corners with only one down in the frame. However, RHP Taylor Dennis (S, 3) took over on the mound and quickly induced a grounder to SS Luis Sardinas for the game-ending double play, closing the 5-3 win for Hickory.
