Rome Walks Off a Winner

Rome, GA - The Rome Braves defeated the Augusta GreenJackets in walk off fashion Wednesday night 4-3. The Braves trailed 3-2 in the ninth and rallied to score two runs to win the ball game.

Rome's first run came in the second inning when Robby Hefflinger scored on a wild pitch. The GreenJackets scored two in the fourth on a force out and an RBI single by Carlos Willoughby. Rome's Elmer Reyes answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 2-2. Both teams stayed deadlocked through seven innings. In the eighth, Elliott Blair reached on a throwing error by Rome pitcher David Peterson and later scored on another Willoughby RBI single to put Augusta on top 3-2.

Rome lead off the ninth with back to back walks issued to Will Skinner and Chase Anselment. Cory Brownsten attempted to sacrifice both runners over, but Augusta's pitcher Kyle Vazquez over threw the third baseman and both runners came around to score the tying and game winning runs.

Peterson (3-1) came on in relief to earn the victory for Rome as Vazquez (5-4) was credited with the loss for Augusta after allowing two walks and the error in the ninth. Both pitching staffs combined for 16 strikeouts and eleven walks on the night.
