Stockton Ports News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Stockton Ports scored five runs in the final third of their game with the Bakersfield Blaze on Saturday night. Unfortunately for Stockton, it couldn't get them out of an eight-run hole. The Blaze netted 15 hits and built a 9-1 lead on their way to a second straight win over the Ports by a final of 9-6 at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
The Blaze did most of their early damage on infield singles as an infield single from Kyle Petty helped Bakersfield take advantage of a first-inning Stockton error and give them a 1-0 lead. They made it 4-0 in the second after back-to-back infield hits opened the frame. An RBI groundout from Drew Jackson, followed by singles from Aaron Barbosa and Jay Baum made it a 4-0 Blaze advantage.
Ports starter Zack Erwin (1-3) retired the final seven batters he faced but would suffer the loss on the night, going four innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out three.
Stockton's only run off Blaze starter Andrew Moore (3-2) came in the form of a solo home run hit by John Nogowski, his second home run of the road trip that trimmed the Blaze lead to 4-1. Moore would go on to earn the victory, tossing six innings and allowing four hits while walking two and striking out four.
Cody Stull took over for Erwin in the fifth and gave up a double to Petty and a single to Chantz Mack that put runners at second and third. Daniel Torres would single to left to drive in Petty and a fielding error committed by shortstop Melvin Mercedes allowed Mack to score and run the Blaze lead to 6-1.
Bakersfield opened the lead up more in the sixth. With a runner at second base and one out, Baum hit a pop up back of the second baseman Joe Bennie that was dropped for the third Ports error of the night. The error allowed Drew Jackson to score and make it a 7-1 game. After Stull struck out Petty, he was lifted for Rob Huber who gave up a two-run double to Mack, followed by back-to-back singles to Torres and Justin Seager that ran the Blaze lead to 9-1.
Stull went an inning-and-two-thirds and allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out two. Huber went on to finish the ballgame for Stockton, going two-and-a-third innings and allowing one run on four hits while walking one.
Thyago Vieira took over for the Blaze in the seventh and, with two on and one out, gave up a deep fly ball to Argenis Raga that appeared to go over the fence and hit off the light station. The ball ricocheted back onto the playing field and the umpires ruled that the ball hadn't traveled over the fence. Raga settled for an RBI double and Ports manager Rick Magnante and hitting coach Tommy Everidge were both ejected. With two outs in the inning, Mercedes delivered a two-run single that brought both Raga and Sandber Pimentel home anyways to cut the Blaze lead to 9-4.
Vieira stayed in the game to start the eighth inning and gave up a leadoff home run to Tyler Marincov, his first home run since May 1st. After a walk and a single, Vieira was lifted for Aaron Brooks (SV, 1), who walked Pimentel to load the bases. Brooks, though, would get Jose Brizuela to hit into a rally-killing 4-6-3 double-play that plated a run but put a halt to the Stockton momentum.
Brooks went on to work a scoreless ninth and notch his first save of the season.
The Ports and Blaze play the third game of their four-game set on Sunday afternoon at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Daniel Gossett (1-1, 4.05 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Bakersfield left-hander Anthony Misiewicz (1-3, 3.98 ERA). First pitch is set for 12 p.m. PDT.
