Big Offense, Big Win
May 15, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
Andrew Moore sped through six innings of baseball, the Bakersfield Blaze offense piled up 15 hits, and despite a rocky pair of innings late in the game, the Blaze held off the Stockton Ports for the club's second win in a row, 9-6, on Saturday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield.
Moore (W, 2-1) was, once again, superlative in his work on the mound. The Oregon State product worked at a breakneck pace, giving up his only run on a solo homer to Stockton's John Nogowski in the visiting half of the 5th inning. Overall, Moore worked 6.0 innings for another quality start, giving up a run on just four hits, walking two and striking out four.
And while Andrew Moore had been plagued with a lack of run support at times on the 2016 season, such was not the case on Saturday. The Blaze plated a run in the 1st on a pair of singles and an error, and added three more on five singles in the 2nd inning, nearly knocking Ports starter Zack Erwin (L, 1-3) from the game.
Erwin ultimately stuck around for two additional innings of work before departing, and the Blaze, wisely, continued to battle on offense, adding a pair of runs in the 5th off Cody Stull, and three more - all unearned - in the 6th.
At the time, the Blaze led 9-1, but the game would grow interesting when Moore went to the clubhouse.
Thyago Vieira came into the contest without having allowed an earned run on the year, but Vieira never found himself tonight, serving up five runs in an inning-plus. Aaron Brooks (S, 1) was summoned to get the contest back under control in the 8th, and the big righthander stuck around for a scoreless 9th to finish it off.
Offensively, Kyle Petty, Chantz Mack and Daniel Torres led the charge. Petty had three hits and a pair of RBI; Torres went 3-for-5 to raise his average to .309, and Mack had two more hits and two more runs driven in for 23 on the year.
The win is number two in a row for a Blaze team that's looking to make a move in the standings after a rough two weeks. And they'll look to continue the surge in a high noon game on Sunday, followed by the first ever Helicopter Candy Drop at the field.
Fans are encouraged to arrive at least 10 minutes early, as tickets are going fast. Those not in attendance can listen to every moment of Blaze action live at BakersfieldBlaze.com or via TuneIn Radio. Dan Besbris has the call.
