Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
San Bernardino, CA- Kyle Garlick had a go-ahead RBI double in the seventh inning and Grant Holmes pitched six strong innings, as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes dropped the Inland Empire 66ers on Saturday night, winning 5-3 at San Manuel Stadium.
Garlick finished with three hits, including the game-winner, helping the Quakes improve to 8-0 against Inland Empire this year. Dating back to last season, the Quakes have now won 15 in a row against the 66ers.
With the game even at 3-3 in the seventh, Garlick ripped a two-out RBI double, chasing home Erick Mejia to put the Quakes ahead for good at 4-3 against 66ers' reliever Jordan Piche (2-1).
Garlick wasn't done with his seventh-inning heroics, as he doubled home Mejia again in the ninth, again with two outs, giving Rancho an insurance run at 5-3.
Karch Kowalczyk worked a scoreless ninth, despite a lead-off walk and a two-out single, earning his third save of the year.
Quakes' starter Grant Holmes flirted with a no-hitter, as he didn't allow his first base hit until the sixth inning. An error in the bottom of that sixth inning may have thrown off Holmes' momentum, as he allowed a one-out single to Tim Arakawa. That extra out helped Inland Empire to three unearned runs, as they evened the game at 3-3. Holmes (3-1) would scatter three hits, allowing three unearned runs in the win.
The Quakes struck for the game's first three runs, as Johan Mieses led off the game with a double, then scored on a Tim Locastro RBI single, giving Rancho a 1-0 lead.
The game remained 1-0 until the sixth, when Matt Beaty's two-out single to left against starter Jake Jewell plated both Locastro and Kyle Garlick, giving Rancho a 3-0 lead.
Rancho's bullpen was strong on Saturday, as in addition to Kowalczyk's scoreless ninth, Jeff Malm and Philip Pfeifer combined to work two scoreless innings.
Rancho got out of the gate in a hurry against Inland Empire starter Jake Jewell, as Johan Mieses doubled off the fence to lead-off the game. After a wild pitch moved Mieses to third, Tim Locastro singled to left to make it 1-0.
The Quakes (25-11) look for a third straight win overall on Sunday at 2:05pm. Dodgers' rehabbing left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu is scheduled to start on Sunday and pitch two innings for the Quakes. Inland Empire will go with Alex Klonowski (1-6) in game three of the series.
