San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Giants erased an early 4-0 deficit with an eight-run bottom of the second inning en route to an 11-7 victory over the Modesto Nuts on Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium. The eight-run frame was the highest-scoring inning of the season for the Giants (20-13), who have won 10 out of their last 12 games.

Jonah Arenado (3-for-4, 2 2B, HR, 2 RBI) doubled twice and homered to lead a 13-hit San Jose offensive attack. Chris Shaw (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) also connected for a home run in the win while Jose Vizcaino, Jr. (3-for-4, RBI) added three hits.

A four-run top of the first inning against Giants starter Jordan Johnson gave Modesto a 4-0 lead as Drew Weeks delivered a two-out, two-RBI double before Collin Ferguson blasted a two-run homer to left. San Jose though responded with a big inning of their own in the second. Arenado crushed the first pitch of the inning from Nuts starter Carlos Polanco over the fence in left center for a solo home run. The homer was Arenado's sixth of the season. Back-to-back singles from Vizcaino, Jr. and Brandon Bednar followed before Ty Ross was hit by a pitch to load the bases with none out. Polanco recovered to strikeout Cristian Paulino, but Johneshwy Fargas then lined an 0-2 pitch into left for a single. The hit brought home Vizcaino with the second run of the inning as the bases remained loaded.

Steven Duggar kept the rally going by drawing a five-pitch walk to force home Bednar trimming the Modesto lead to 4-3. C.J Hinojosa was up next and he drove a fly ball to deep center field that was caught by Wes Rogers on the edge of the warning track. Ross tagged on the play and easily scored to tie the game 4-4. However, when Rogers was late returning the ball back to the infield, Fargas, who was originally at second, rounded third and also scored. The two-RBI sacrifice fly for Hinojosa gave San Jose a 5-4 lead.

The rally continued as Shaw stepped to the plate and laced a double into the right center field gap plating Duggar to make it 6-4. Arenado, who had started the inning with a home run, then doubled down the right field line to score Shaw before Vizcaino, Jr. delivered an RBI single to cap the second-inning scoring.

The Giants sent 12 batters to plate in the inning and scored eight runs on seven hits.

Meanwhile, Johnson settled down after his rocky first inning as the right-hander retired Modesto 1-2-3 in the second, third and fourth frames.

Shaw then belted a towering solo home run to deep right center in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to 9-4. The home run was Shaw's team-leading seventh of the year.

Johnson had retired 11 straight Nuts hitters until Emerson Jimenez singled with one out in the top of the fifth. Singles from the next two batters, Omar Carrizales and Rogers, then produced a run to cut the lead to 9-5. However, Johnson was able to limit the damage in the inning as he retired Shane Hoelscher on a fly out to center to strand two runners in scoring position.

Jose Reyes (3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) relieved Johnson to begin the top of the sixth and worked around a leadoff double to keep the lead at four runs. San Jose then pushed across single tallies in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to extend their lead to 11-5. In the sixth, Paulino led off with a single, stole second and eventually scored on a two-out error. An inning later, Arenado led off with a double, moved to third on Vizcaino's single and scored on Ross' one-out single.

Modesto plated single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but would still fall well short. Reyes had retired six straight Nuts batters until Dom Nunez led off the top of the eighth with a single. Following a hit by pitch and a fly out, Ferguson lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Nunez making the score 11-6.

Rodolfo Martinez (1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) pitched the top of the ninth and surrendered a one-out RBI triple to Carrizales, but came back to strikeout the next two hitters, Rogers and Nunez, to finish the game.

Johnson (4-2) was credited with the win after tossing the first five innings with five runs (all earned) and seven hits allowed. He walked one and struck out two. Johnson surrendered just one run over his final four innings.

Polanco (1-2) was charged with seven runs (all earned) on five hits over 1 2/3 innings to take the loss.
