Stockton Ports News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - After three straight games in which the Stockton Ports lacked timely hitting, they finally found their stride on Sunday afternoon at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Stockton built an early lead and never looked back in an 8-3 win over the Bakersfield Blaze that snapped a three-game losing skid.

In the top of the first inning, Blaze starter Anthony Misiewicz (1-4) issued a two-out walk to B.J. Boyd and then gave up a two-run homer to Tyler Marincov, his second home run in as many games, that gave the Ports a 2-0 lead. Bakersfield got a run back in the bottom of the first as Aaron Barbosa coaxed a one-out walk and scored three batters later on an RBI single by Chantz Mack to cut the Ports lead to 2-1.

Stockton got its lead back up to two runs in the fourth. With one out, John Nogowski singled and scored later in the frame on a fielder's choice groundout by Jose Brizuela to make it a 3-1 contest. The Ports would deliver the knock-out blow to Misiewicz in the top of the sixth. Joe Bennie reached on an error to start the inning and, two batters later, Argenis Raga doubled to left to put runners at second and third. Iolana Akau then delivered a two-run double to left that ran the Ports lead to 5-1.

Misiewicz suffered the loss, going 5.2 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking four and striking out two.

Ports starter Daniel Gossett (2-1) retired eight batters in a row taking him from the final out of the second one out into the fifth. Barbosa broke up the stretch with a single to right and Jay Baum followed with a double to left to put runners at second and third. Gossett would bear down, striking out Kyle Petty and getting Mack to fly out to end the inning.

Gossett gave up a solo home run to Tyler Marlette with one out in the sixth but Gossett would finish the frame and go on to earn the victory. The right-hander went six strong innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out three.

Stockton sealed the victory with three runs in the seventh inning off Blaze reliever Kody Kerski. The Ports opened the frame with four straight hits, back-to-back singles from Marincov and Seth Brown, followed by an RBI double by Joe Bennie and a two-run single by Nogowski to stretch the lead to 8-2. Kerski went an inning-and-a-third and allowed three runs on four hits while striking out one.

Kyle Finnegan took over for Gossett in the seventh and gave up a one-out triple to Baum. Two batters later, Baum scored on Mack's second RBI single of the day to make it an 8-3 contest. It was the only run allowed by Finnegan in two innings of relief.

Carlos Navas set the side down in order in a non-save spot in the ninth inning to close out the game for Stockton.

The Ports and Blaze wrap up their four-game set on Monday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Brett Graves (2-4, 4.79 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Bakersfield right-hander Tyler Herb (3-1, 2.61 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:20 p.m. PDT.
