Giants Continue Home-And-Home Series In Modesto The San Jose Giants play the third game of a four-game home-and-home series against the Modesto Nuts this afternoon at John Thurman Field. The teams split the first two games of the series at Municipal Stadium with Modesto winning by a 5-2 score on Friday before the Giants bounced back to claim an 11-7 decision last night.
Winning Ways The Giants enter this afternoon's contest having won 10 out of their last 12 games. San Jose has also won a season-high seven consecutive road games having swept their last two series' away from home (four games at Stockton from May 2-5 and three games at Bakersfield from May 10-12).
14-Game Road Trip Begins Today Today marks the beginning of San Jose's season-high 14-game road trip. Following the two games in Modesto the next two days, the Giants travel to Stockton for three games and then Rancho Cucamonga for four games. The road trip continues with a three-game series in Visalia before San Jose returns to Modesto for two more games. The Giants are 10-7 on the road this season. Immediately following the road trip, San Jose has a season-high 11-game homestand from May 29-June 7.
Starting Strong Giants starting pitchers own a sparkling 2.70 ERA (22 ER/73.1 IP) over the last 12 games. San Jose starters have pitched at least six innings in nine out of the 12 games. Two Giants starters rank among the top seven in the league in ERA: Sam Coonrod (3rd, 1.32) and Jordan Johnson (7th, 3.09).
Arenado Against The Nuts After doubling twice and homering last night, infielder Jonah Arenado is now batting .571 (12-for-21) with four home runs and eight RBI's in five games against Modesto this season. Arenado has hit three home runs in his last four games overall. His six homers this season rank second on the team (one behind Chris Shaw).
In May After posting a 10-10 record in April, the Giants have gone 10-3 thus far in May - the best record in the California League this month. San Jose boasts a 3.10 team ERA in May - second-lowest in the league (Lake Elsinore 2.45).
Hinojosa, Shaw Among League Leaders Despite going hitless the last two nights, shortstop C.J Hinojosa is currently tied for second in the California League with a .348 batting average this season. Hinojosa's .437 on-base percentage this season is also second in the league. First baseman Chris Shaw ranks tied for eighth in the league in batting average (.325), tied for sixth in home runs (7), tied for third in RBI's (28), tied for first in doubles (12) and fourth in slugging (.593).
Limiting Walks The Giants pitching staff has issued the fewest number of walks in the California League this season (96 - 2.9 per game). Conversely, San Jose's staff is last in the league in strikeouts (240 - 7.3 per game).
San Francisco Affiliation This year is San Jose's 29th season as an affiliate of the San Francisco Giants - the longest current partnership of any team in the California League. Since their inception in 1988, the San Jose Giants have won six league championships (1998, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010), 11 North Division titles and qualified for the playoffs 21 times (in 28 seasons). The Giants enter this year having posted a league-record 12 consecutive winning seasons (2004-2015).
Opponent Notes: Modesto Nuts The Modesto Nuts, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, are 14-21 this season and have lost 13 out of their last 19 games. The Nuts are seventh in the league in batting average (.247), sixth in runs scored (4.7 per game) and seventh in ERA (4.38). Modesto is 8-9 at home this year and 3-3 against the Giants.
