May 15, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers fell 5-3 to the visiting Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at San Manuel Stadium on Saturday night. The loss kept the 66ers winless against the Rancho Cucamonga (25-11) in eight meetings this year.
The Quakes got to Inland Empire (10-26) starter Jake Jewell for run out of the shoot when Johan Mieses doubled to left to open the game. He scored when Tim Locastro followed with an RBI single. Jewell would then cruise until the fifth when with two outs Matt Beatty delivered a two RBI single to give the Quakes a 3-0 lead. Jewell went six innings in the game and allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits with two walks and as season-high nine Ks; he did not figure in the decision. Meanwhile, Quakes starter Grant Holmes was rolling. The Dodgers' first round pick in 2014 did not allow a baserunner until the third inning and held the Sixers hitless until the sixth inning. Zach Houchins reached first on an error in the sixth and with one out the 66ers finally broke through when Tim Arakawa singled; the hit extended Arakawa's league-best hit streak to 20 games. Bothe men scored on Hutton Moyer's two-run triple to make it a 3-2 deficit. Moyer was making his Cal League debut. Caleb Adams then followed with an RBI single to tie the game.
The Quakes answered in the top of the seventh however when Kyle Garlick delivered a two-out RBI single to take the lead back against IE reliever Jordan Piche' (2-1). Garlick struck again with two outs in the top of the ninth for another clutch RBI single to make it a 5-3 lead. He finished the game 3-for-4 and raised his season average to .348. The Sixers put two men on in the bottom of the ninth but Karch Kowalczyk escaped the jam to earn his third save. Holmes (3-1) earned the win with six innings of three-hit work. He allowed three unearned runs while walking one man and fanning six. Inland Empire has now lost 15 straight against the Quakes dating back to last July. The Sixers are 2-20 against the Cal League's Southern Division this year.
The series continues Sunday at 2:05 pm and can be heard live on 66ers.com. Los Angeles Dodgers southpaw Hyun-Jin Ryu is expected to start for the Quakes on a MLB rehab assignment while Alex Klonowski (1-6) goes for Inland Empire.
