Fitting End to Regular Season for Bakersfield, Final Chapter Awaits

September 6, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

No script could match the actual roller coaster events of the '16 Bakersfield Blaze.

Unfortunately for Bakersfield and their fans, the final days are now numbered.

Justin Seager and John Nogowski were the final pitchers to throw for their respective teams, but Nogowski was also the one swinging a swift bat as the Stockton Ports beat the Blaze 11-10.

With one team heading to the playoffs and the other ready for vacation, both clubs elected to use position players in the 12th inning of Game 140.

A seesaw battle saw the Blaze lead 1-0, 2-0, and 5-2 before the Ports came storming back.

Stockton not only caught Bakersfield, but they also scored four runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-5 lead.

Not to be outdone, Joe DeCarlo and Daniel Torres decided to give fans one final thrilling comeback as the third baseman and catcher delivered in the clutch.

DeCarlo's RBI single in the eighth inning started a 2-out rally before Torres struck for a bases clearing double to tie the game at 9-9.

The outburst late for Bako didn't stop as DeCarlo again drove in Chantz Mack in the ninth inning to give the Blaze a 10-9 lead.

In a first this season, Thyago Vieira (BS, 1) could not seal the deal for the road team. Vieira walked Seth Brown before Melvin Mercedes drove him in to tie the game at 10-10.

Mercedes finished the night by going 4-6 with 2 RBI and two runs scored.

Chris Iriart also continued to shine against the Blaze by going 3-6 with a home run, double, and 3 RBI.

The end is near for the Bakersfield, but the date is unknown. The Blaze will start the playoffs as the second half North Division champions as they will square off against the San Jose Giants in the Mini-Series Wednesday night, September 7th.

San Jose is expected to start Jordan Johnson, while Bakersfield will counter with Osmer Morales.

Game 1 from San Jose will feature David Gascon and Dan Besbris on the call courtesy of TuneIn Radio and BakersfieldBlaze.com starting at 7:00 pm.
