Late Rally Comes Up Shy for Space Cowboys
July 3, 2023 - Pacific Coast League (PCL)
Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, TX - A furious ninth inning rally by the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (34-47, 1-5) brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth in a 5-2 defeat against the Oklahoma City Dodgers (55-24, 5-1) on Monday night at Constellation Field.
Trailing 5-0 going to the bottom of the ninth, Joe Perez reached on an error with one out and moved to second when Michael Busch committed a fielding error in the ensuing at bat. An infield fly allowed the runners to move up and a single from David Hensley broke up the shutout for Sugar Land. Rylan Bannon then slipped a single through the right side, putting two men on base and bringing up Pedro León as the tying run. The Space Cowboys' outfielder hit a tapper up the first base line that was fielded cleanly for the final out, sealing the Dodgers win.
RHP Kyle McGowin (L, 2-4) struck out the side to begin his outing in the first and sat down the first five hitters he faced but a solo home run from Devin Mann put the Dodgers up 1-0. McGowin tossed a scoreless third before taking a line drive off his leg in the fourth but stayed in for the remainder of his start. The righty gave up one run in the fourth and a pair of runs in the sixth but threw 7.0 innings and gave up just three earned runs, striking out seven.
Sugar Land had their best scoring chance against LHP Mike Montgomery (W, 1-1) in the bottom of the third. Perez walked but was picked off for the first out. Luke Berryhill walked, Hensley reached on an infield single and Bannon walked to load up the bases, but Montgomery struck out the next batter to leave the bases loaded.
The Space Cowboys now head on the road for a six-game series in Round Rock to take on the Express on Tuesday night. RHP Misael Tamarez is scheduled to start for Sugar Land while the Express have not named a starter for a 6:35 pm first pitch. The game can be heard on ESPN 92.5 FM or online here and seen on MiLB.TV.
