Late Rally Bites Albuquerque in 5-4 Loss to Reno

July 3, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

NEED TO KNOW: In front of 16,286 fans at Isotopes Park Friday night, the Albuquerque Isotopes (36-46) gave up four unanswered runs in the final four innings to drop a 5-4 decision to the Reno Aces (38-44) in the four-game series finale. Albuquerque still won the series three games to one.

THE TURNING POINT: Albuquerque took an early lead in the second inning when Roger Bernadina singled in Matt McBride with two outs. Reno would come back to tie it in the fourth, but the Isotopes responded with a three-spot in the fifth. Trevor Story mashed a two-run home run, and McBride singled in Kyle Parker to cap the frame. Reno began chipping away in the sixth with a single run. The Aces then tacked on two more runs in the seventh and eighth to tie it at four. The final blow came with a two-out RBI double in the top of the ninth to give Reno the 5-4 lead and series-salvaging win.

MOVING LIKE BERNIE: Outfielder Roger Bernadina did a little bit of everything Friday night. At the plate, Bernadina went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI single. Defensively, Bernadina gunned down a run at home trying to score on a sacrifice fly to center field. During his last six games, he is batting .429 (9-for-21) with seven runs scored, a triple, two homers and nine RBI.

LET ME TELL YOU A STORY: Heralded infield prospect Trevor Story mashed his first-career Triple-A home run in the fifth inning, a two-run shot over the left field wall. It is his 11th home run overall this season after he hit 10 with Double-A New Britain.

STILL STREAKING: 2015 Triple-A All-Star Matt McBride extended his hitting streak to a team season-longest 17 games with his 1-for-2 game. During his streak, McBride is batting .429 (28-for-65) with 19 runs scored, 10 doubles, three homers and 16 RBI. McBride left the game in the fifth inning with an injury.

BUTLER AT YOUR SERVICE: Isotopes starting pitcher Eddie Butler turned in his best start since joining the Topes. He tossed seven innings of three-hit ball, striking out five against no walks. He scattered eight hits. 68 of his 92 pitches were for strikes.

ATTENDANCE: The 16,286 fans in attendance at Isotopes Park Friday night were the second-most in the venue's history. Last season 16,348 fans on the Fourth of July was the only crowd larger. The fans were treated to post-game fireworks with a live music accompaniment from the Albuquerque Youth Symphony Program.

ON DECK: The Isotopes will hit the road for a four-game series against the Las Vegas 51s beginning Saturday night at 8:05. Left-handed pitcher John Lannan (3-3, 4.10) is scheduled to take the hill for Albuquerque, while Las Vegas has yet to announce a starter.

IN THE HOLE: After their four-game stop at Las Vegas, the Isotopes will conclude the pre-All-Star Break schedule with a five-game series at the El Paso Chihuahuas. Albuquerque's next home game will follow the All-Star on July 16.
