Iowa Clobbered by Round Rock Friday Night

DES MOINES, Iowa (July 3, 2015) - The Round Rock Express (47-33) scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to help down the Iowa Cubs (42-38) 11-5 in Pacific Coast League action Friday night at Principal Park. Iowa allowed 15 hits to the Express offense as the two teams split the four-game series.

The fireworks started in the top of the first inning when Express infielder Joey Gallo hit a home run, his first hit at the Triple-A level.

Round Rock flipped the switch starting in the sixth inning. Jared Hoying started off the scoring frenzy with an RBI single to drive in Michael Choice. Two more runs followed in the sixth. The Express tacked on five more runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

Iowa's scoring started in the third inning on a Kyle Schwarber RBI single. The I-Cubs tagged on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Stolmy Pimentel threw a wild pitch to bring in Rubi Silva. Schwarber then knocked an RBI double to drive in Jonathan Mota and Jorge Soler. Iowa's final run came in the bottom of the eighth when Silva hit a double to left-center field to bring in John Andreoli.

Iowa righty Felipe Paulino allowed four runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 5.1 innings in a no-decision.

Righty Yoervis Medina (1-2) suffered the loss for Iowa. He gave up four hits, five earned runs and a walk with two strikeouts in 1.0 inning.

Express right-hander Stolmy Pimentel started on the mound for Round Rock. He allowed six hits, four earned runs and three walks with eight strikeouts over 5.0 innings.

Righty Ross Wolf (7-5) earned the win for the Express. He allowed four hits and one earned run over 3.0 innings. Wolf also struck out five. Right-hander Francisco Mendoza spun a scoreless inning for Round Rock to finish it off.

Schwarber led Iowa with a 4-for-4 night. He also drove in three and walked once. Christian Villanueva and Silva each had multi-hit nights. Mota scored twice and stole a base.

Hoying paced Round Rock offensively. He went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Choice went 3-for-6 for the Express with an RBI and two runs scored.

The I-Cubs will now head to Metairie, La., to take on the New Orleans Zephyrs in game one of a five-game set on Saturday. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. CT at Zephyr FIeld. Right-hander Frank Batista (0-1, 2.25) will take the hill for Iowa against Z's righty Jose Urena (4-0, 1.21). The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live-streamed at Iowacubs.com.
